Eldorado Star Party

Posted By John Love

I went last year and the sky is pretty dark. There are a few small light bubbles. One to the north-east one to the south-east and a small one to the west. The air is pretty dry so ther is not a lot of reflection. The road is very close by but they have installed a light fence which was fairly effective. There is also little traffic late at night. The scope field was new last year and had little grass, but they expected to have some grass rooted by this year to keep the dust down. The showers were a little spartan, but that is to be improved. The food was good and it was nice not to have to cook. The picture was made on Thursday before many people arrived. There is a lot of room for growth.

Overall a great star-party.

Scope Trailers

Posted By John Love

This is my "scope hauler". I have used it to transport various scopes. This shot was from the Okie-Tex starparty which is about 8 hours from home. The trailer has a "topper" used by many phone companies for small service trucks. The side doors make it easy to get to equipment. I have shelves that attach to the side below the doors where I set up computers for imaging. It is also a good place to crash when the scopes are out. 8)

I just got my 88s and I will have them at the Okie-Tex starparty if anyone wants to check them out. My initial tests look like these are "keepers".

"Revenge is a dish, best served cold."

From The Wrath of Kahn and some British military commander before that.

The Ultimate Star Party

The light pollution maps show OTSP and TSP to be darker, but I have heard that the air in cloudcroft is very transparent so there is little reflection of light from the nearby towns.

Ham Radio at Star Parties

I plan to take my vintage FT-7 to Okie-Tex. I am still working on an antenna since there are not many places to tie up a long wire. We will have 2 meter radios as well. 146.54 simplex.

We have a group of astro-hams that use the 92 machine in Denton, TX to "talk shop". We also have a Yahoo group called "Star-Gazers" where we set up star parties and the like. We have a lot of fun, but we need more clear weather.

Apogee RA-88s/Hercules Mount

Posted By John Love

This is how I mounted my RA-88s. An old SCT mount and some ATM spirit and "presto". Encoders and DSC are next on the list. I might even try to find an old LX-200 mount for drives and GOTO operation.

What mount do you use?

Posted By John Love

I mounted my RA-88s on a Meade fork from an old 8" SCT. It gives nice slow motion controls and i will be putting encoders and DSC on it soon.
