announced today that it will be laying off approximately 10% of its workforce... ostensibly to "free up" revenue for marketing...
All this in a booming "recovering" economy. Go figure.
The only things that i can see booming and growing are the deficit and the size of government... all this during a Republican administration and a Republican-dominated congress. Gee.
Still no real net recovery of jobs lost since Dubya got in...
Oh, i know! it's all FDR's fault!
Never mind.
Hey, Superbowl's coming! What's Britney's latest CD? What's on Fox tonight?

GWB will be re-elected in a landslide... as will most if not all Republicans standing for election.
Goverment will again double in size.
Ditto the deficit.
Economy will slide by New Year's...maybe by Thanksgiving.

Any job growth will be almost exclusively among the newly legalised illegal/undocumented aliens.
War will spread outside of Iraq borders... no Iraqi elections yet.
North Korea will still be making nukes... and begin testing them.
Within the next four years a national emergency will cause an imposition of martial law and the "temporary" suspension of national elections.
Glenn will further pad his retirement fund... you go, guy!

So, from here the plan seems to be this:
Retire the current crop of "activists" and replace them with a new crop of "activists."
Okay, fine. i think that unless they're very carefully vetted, Dubya & co. will find that the new ones will behave little differently that the old ones: they will CONTINUE to throw out defective laws that don't pass constitutional muster.
Hey, know what? The judges don't bring these suits to court so they can knock down those laws and statutes... They only make rulings when asked to do so.
Maybe instead of gritching about the courts, the legislators ought to spend a bit more time crafting laws that will pass muster if challenged, and a lot less time raising obscene amounts of money for their reelections?
Of all the HOGWASH i heard in the Fate of the Union Massage delivered by Mr. Bush, the phrase "activist judges" was the one that really stuck in the craw.
But that's okay. He's got the money and the numbers and the guns... he's in like Flynn this November...
And it's still all FDR's fault.

i think Mr. Clarke hit the proverbial nail on the head.
i recall my earlier years in catechism class at my parochial school... we learnt to polly-parrot all the pat answers to all the set questions of our "religion" (in those days interchangable term for "faith.")
Even as a second grader i remember asking myself why such a thing as faith in god had to be so burdened by all the definitions and regulations and dogmas? Seems to me, as it was just beginning to glimmer then, that "religion" was what actually kept us at arm's length from knowing or understanding god.
All the dogma that we were expected to accept "on faith" only served to undermine any belief that any of it were true.

Communists/Captialists: cross-fertilization?Posted By mike welsh |
Whilst i know that Stalin and his successors spent a great deal of effort to undermine and co-opt the West, i look at it this way: Communism (at least Soviet-style)is dead. Socialism-as-we-believed-we-knew-it is moribund. Free-market Capitalism seems to have driven the nails into it.
The old USSR collapsed under its own weight, pushed by the propaganda machinery of Free-market Capitalism. It worked, but now we see that some of the old Reds have learnt the game and are taking Capitalism to the extreme form: Robber Barony which is quickly leading to Kleptocracy.
The Chinese have done a little better... they've adopted a gradualist approach and are learning Capitalism eagerly and soon will surpass us at what we thought was our own game.
i shouldn't worry too much about creeping "nanny-state" socialism here or elsewhere... the human condition favours a very basic instinct: greed. There's plenty of that and to spare in this world.
it will be interesting to see the evolution of this as national borders become less and less meaningful.
