Pentax 5.2mm XL and Speers Waler 7.5-10mm

Thanks Floyd.....good comparison. I have just acquired an Obsession 15" and was looking into some nice short focal length eyepieces. I have both the 7mm and 10.5mm XL's and love them. Here are a few questions though:

1. What's your opinion about using a nice quality barlow for the 10.5mm XL? This eyepiece is very comfortable to use and with the barlow it would give the same focal length.

2. When increasing magnification, your true field of view is diminished. The Pentax XL has an apparent field of view of 65 degrees. Whats your feeling about getting the Nagler with an 82 degree field in order to get that extra bit of true field? Do you like the performance of the Pentax more than the Nagler?

I'm not saying its the best, but for the money it would ba a good choice. The Meade 4000 QX 36mm would give you a 5.5mm exit pupil. What's the focal length of the scope?

There is one of these eyepieces selling on astromart for $85.

How did you get the glue on the inside of the cage? I'm assuming you used 3M Super 77? Did you cut the velvet into 4 pieces to get it around the spider veins? Or did you just remove all the hardware and put it back after the UTA was Flocked? Nice job....very interested to know how you installed it.

Also, where did you get the bag for the secondary mirror? Is it Microfiber?

Sorry for all the questions.....it looks great and was hoping to follow suite.

Remember when I told you I never knew Katrina could sew? Check this out....I never knew she had it in her. I certainly couldn't have made this myself. Heavy cotton fabric on the outside (almost like denim) and nylon on the inside. She padded it too! 1/2 inch foam on the top and sides and 3/4 inch foam on the bottom. It only cost me about $10 in materials from the fabric department at Wal-Mart. Of course it took her about 8 hours of total time to make it.

Truss tube case, not as elagant

Looks great Floyd. Boy does having a truss pole bag make it easier.

Wal-mart sells heavy duty nylon straps for 3 bucks that make rolling the pole bag up much easier. I got the carabeener (sp? smile ) from Sears for $5 in a sale bin. Very easy to carry.......

For For planetary : Pentax XW 7 is good for a C11

I had a Celestron 9.25" SCT and found for planetary viewing the 7mm Pentax XL was the most used eyepiece in my collection. There were very few nights in MA and in FL where I had to step up to a 10.5 Pentax XL. Contrast was wonderful both eyepieces. As for the 5mm....I wouldn't recommend it. It's just to much power for the scope.

Keep in mind my focal length in the 9.25 was a bit shorter then an 11. I was pushing 335x with the 7mm. If you use the 7mm your scope your looking at 400x. With the 10.5.....266x. But the extra aperture might allow you to push the planets a bit more then my scope. I say go with the 7mm XL, I saw one on astromart for $195 (it's still for sale). Go with a used eyepiece. This way if your not happy with it, you can sell the eyepiece without loosing a lot of money.

Another suggestion would be to try and get yourself to a star party and meet someone with one of those eyepieces. Try it in your scope and see what you think. This is not always an option though.

Collimation Help Request - Now with video on later post!

Make sure your secondary is centered in the UTA and also check to see if the focuser is squared with the secondary. The book "The Dobsonian Telescope" by David Kriege and Richard Barry has a good explanation of collimation. I had a problem with my Obsession last weekend and found that my optics were miss aligned. I spent the latter part of Sunday correcting the problem. Once your secondary and focuser are in the right position, collimation is a snap.
