Fantastic image Wes, the best I've seen of this area! Wonderful sense of depth to the terrain.

Excellent detail Mike. Yes it gets imaged to death but of course there's a good reason, its hard to resist such a spectacular sight and with a result like this I'm glad you didn't! smile

Tycho in High-Res

Posted By Stefan Lammel

Terrific image Wes! What stands out to me apart from the great detail inside the crater is the smoothness immediately surrounding the crater where the ground was completely blasted by the impact, then the secondary cratering begins a bit futher out.

The raked pattern is curious, it seems to run parallel many kilometers apart, not radial to Tycho as might be expected. Some of the parallel scarring, eg. on the west inner walls of Sasserides and Sasserides A (north & NE of Tycho), doesn't point towards Tycho at all, suggesting that at least some of the scarring came from an older much larger impact some distance away.

Stefan

Comet 17P Holmes Jet structure

Posted By Stefan Lammel

Pete Lawrence has suggested the Larson-Sekanina filter which is frequently used by comet imagers to bring out the jet detail. I discovered the demo version of Astroart has this filter and this is a screen shot of the result with the default settings, what an amazing filter! I wonder if it is available elsewhere or maybe I will have to fork out for the full version if I get into this...

Thanks Pete! smile

Stefan

and 31st, here you can also see that it appears to have slightly expanded...

- as you can see I still have problems with the hot pixels despite using a dark frame in Registax. It looks like it doesn't apply it to all the frames or maybe I'm doing something wrong?

Thanks very much all! smile

Ansuman - I think what is just about visible in this image is the jet in the coma, the tail itself is further outside to the right, see these images for some amazing examples - http://spaceweather.com/comets/gallery_holmes_page8.htm
