Field Flattener for Birds And Animals?

Posted By Steven Jindra

For using a quality ED triplet and at times an ED doublet, for shooting birds nimals and other daytime terrestrial objects, is there usually much benefit of using a non- reducing field flattener?

My scopes are the SV115T35 F7 800mm triplet and the SV102ED F7 700mm doublet with a CANON 7D DSLR camera.

Thanks

Removing SCT OTA from fork mount

Posted By Steven Jindra

AK
It's pretty easy. Usually I loosen the two bolts at the bottom of each fork arm a bit to give them a little play. Then remove the three screws on each side of the OTA, slide it forward and it's free. Just handle with care to avoid scrating the OTA.
Hope this helps.

Perfect City Scope?

Posted By Steven Jindra

Chuck
I also live in a very light poluted area (next to Houston, Texas). I found the Nexstar 5" to be a good city scope, especially when portability is important. It is very portable, it has a decent sized aperature, and when aligned the Go-To will find objects that can be seen in the scope even in the light poluted city but would otherwise be difficult or impossible to find.
Just my opinion.

Televue Pronto vs. Stellarvue SV78S

I have an LX-200 10" (original style) and have installed a Takahashi FS-60C in a similar application as yours. It has worked out great for both visual and for wider field video photography for me.

The main advantage for piggy back mounting is that it is smaller and lighter than the other scopes mentioned. Being an APO - it thinks it's a larger scope (70mm +), has little or no color, takes power very well, and comes as a wide field (F5.9 355mm fl) scope.

I was able to purchase mine on AstroMart for $600, so it was cost comparable as well.

Just adding an another option.

A good Grandma scope?

Tom
I would recommend a Nexstar 5. It's close to the size of the ETX 5", but is a definate step up in quality. Once set up for a site, the user interface is pretty simple. It also allows for use of SCT accesaries such as a 6.3 focal reducer.
Just another option to consider.

Red Dot Finder for Tak FS60C?

Posted By Steven Jindra

Paul
I used to have an FS-60C. I used the standard Celestron red dot finder base. I just had to elongate the holes to the inside a little and it worked fine with the existing finder mounting screws.

Is there such an adaptor?

Vin
The Meade #1209 electric focuser (it comes with the LX200 GPS models) include such an adaptor as part of the kit. I am not sure if Meade will sell it separately.

EP's for 9.25 Nexstar GPS? Advise needed.

Posted By Steven Jindra

David
For my 9.25" I mainly use the following 3 eyepieces:

BW-Optik 30mm UWA 2" - It cost $95 plus shipping (I just got it). It gives very nice wide field views.

Meade 14mm UWA - 1-1/4" or 2" (my favorite eyepiece).

Meade 8.8mm UWA - 1-1/4" or 2" for planets.

I have a 7mm Nagler, but seldom does the seeing allow for it in a bigger F10 scope.

But if you purchased the starter set you should be in good shape for quite a while. In 1-1/4" you could get by with similar focal lengths:

30 to 32mm Plossl
14 to 17mm Plossl
and a 9 to 10mm Plossl

I believe it was Cloudy Nights that had a recent review describing the quality of views with just basic Plossl eyepieces.

Anyway, enjoy.

It is a nice shot. What were the details of your imaging and then processing? I am relatively new to imaging and am still trying to learn techniques from others.
Thanks
