It's always fun to look at less familiar targets. Thanks for sharing it. BTW, the framing looks great to me.

Omega Centauri

All are great shots, Greg. It's nice to see those Southern sites way up here in New Jersey (and snow predicted once again!). You've really got that Nikon humming. The resolution on the cluster is amazing. Can't wait to try mine (oops, my wife's) one out soon.
Keep 'em coming,
Larry

Question? on Processing Subexposures

Posted By Larry Durst

Hi Tyler,
You might want to check out this excellent tutorial:

http://www.lefevre.darkhorizons.org/articles/proctutorial2.htm

The aligning and stacking chapter has a discussion and examples of the differences.

Processing Tutorial-Larry Durst's suggested link

Posted By Larry Durst

Luca,
My guess is that Paul has not finished the tutorial--a work in progress. He used to be very active on some other boards, but I haven't seen any posts from him in some time. I do hope all is well with him.
Larry
PS: If I might make another suggestion--the book Handbook of Astronomical Image Processing that comes with the AIP4Win processing software is worth it for the text alone. It gives a good background into the actual rationale and programming that drives the various processing methods.

Selecting a CCD Camera

Posted By Larry Durst

Welcome to the digital domain! Obviously budget will be a big factor. Also, have you limited your thinking to just SBIG, or are you also considering Starlight Xpress and others?

Jim,
Really beautiful. Those stars are brilliant. I've avoided open cluster, but you give me inspiration. Now, if I could just capture and process colors like that...

Thor's Helmet (NGC2359)

Incredible. Those stars are as stunning as the Helmet itself. All that time really paid off.

How to get started?

Posted By Larry Durst

Hi James,
If you will be happy shooting planets and the moon for a bit, I found that starting with a webcam really helped me ease into imaging with quick results. All it takes is a Toucam or other similar webcam (or perhaps a Meade LPI), a laptop, very inexpensive 1-1/4 inch adapter and some free to inexpensive downloadable software (I use K3CCDTools for acquisition, Registax for processing.) There are lots of good tutorials on the web, as well. I found that it helped me make the transition from staring into an EP, notebook or sketchbook in hand, to doing all the tinkering necessary for shooting. It's practically a different hobby (yes, even more expensive!). I can't speak to using your digital camera, but I imagine this would serve the same purpose...and let you shoot DSO's as well.
Good luck with it all,
Larry Durst
PS: I did get totally hooked and now use a dedicated CCD imager.
