Stellarvue SV5S or TEC 140 or other?

Posted By ken pfeiffer

From what I understand, the final design for the SV5 is not yet fixed. SV just announced a double flourite 135mm f5.4 scope to be produced in very limited quantities. I had heard that the SV5 was going to be a 127mm air spaced triplet, but no one outside Stellarvue has seen one yet except for a few privileged testers. They were going to show the prototype at NEAF but apparently they got sidetracked. Vic just mentioned that some other designs were in the works, too. They are apparently waiting for RTMC to formally make some announcements and to show some new prototypes.

I am sure the new scopes will be really awesome. It seems like a very exciting time for Stellarvue right now.

exit pupil

Posted By ken pfeiffer

Not only does the 35 Pan have a large exit pupil, it also has large eye relief. As Jon mentioned, when you use it with a fast refractor it appears that you are immersing yourself into a crystal ball full of stars. It really is am amazing view. You will get somewhat of the same effect with your present scope.

The best thing would be for you to go to a star party where you can see the difference for yourself. But then again, that could be VERY dangerous for your wallet. smile

Any Advice on buying?

Posted By ken pfeiffer

A guy in our club has had more than one
of those over the years, and I have spent a lot of time looking through them. He is definitely a tinkerer, but the scopes were surprisingly good after his efforts. Not Tak quality to be sure, but a good bang for the buck.

Thanks all for the advice.

I am glad you got some honest talk from Meade, Floyd. We are looking forward to a report on your viewing experiences with your new baby. Given your extensive experience, it will be very interesting to hear about comparisons with your other favorite scopes.

Clear skies!

Tinker, tinker, tinker. I had a feeling you would like this one. Please post those pictures of what you have done so we can all benefit from your experience. With any luck it will clear up and you can share your visual experiences, too.

Another Comparison - SV4 vs WO 110 ZS

Posted By ken pfeiffer

Hi Steve,

You might consider the SV102T, also. It is the same as the SV4 but with a longer focal length, f-7.9, so it is a little better corrected. This is not to say that the SV4 is not well corrected, but the 102T might be a bit better planetary scope if that is your primary interest.
Bottom line is that you will not be unhappy with either scope you mentioned.

66mm-what's the attraction?

Posted By ken pfeiffer

It's a bit smaller and would make for a better spotting (or birding) scope if that is any interest. Also, using a filter in the day won't be much fun, and you will get a lot of CA observing a bird against a bright sky.

Why an APO or Refractor?

Hey Floyd,

Can you even get the entire double cluster in the Starmaster's field of view?

Nice Tripods for spotter

Do you want to be schlepping this around for birding or wildlife observation, or are you more interested in a stationary platform?
