I'm not sure they didn't expect it to work, Mel. As we learn more, and with some hindsight, it seems clear that the plan was to incite violence and then demand to stay in power under the insurrection act. How many times did we publicly hear Trump boasting about all the president's emergency powers? How many times did Trump "joke" publicly about staying in office beyond even two terms? In hindsight, the foreshadowing is evident, especially when coupled with evidence from the committee. The committee has built its story from Republicans who were, in many cases, loyal to Trump. Not from his political enemies. So, please think about that before mocking their work.
Regardless, just because your plan was stupid from the beginning doesn't mean that you are innocent.
"The most damning accounts came not from Trump's political opponents but his inner circle at the White House, as multiple former Trump White House and campaign aides gave firsthand accounts of the President's unwillingness to accept reality and abandon his delusions about the election.""The committee, which consisted of seven Democrats and two Republicans, relied almost exclusively on testimony from GOP officials and nonpartisan civil servants during its set of hearings, in an attempt to rebut criticisms of partisanship."
