Jupiter May 18, 2009

Hi all,

In addition to the Europa-Ganymede occultation, seeing was good enough for me to capture the following image.

Saturn from March 29

Posted By Paul Maxson

Hi all,

Now that I finished the occultation images from Jupiter's moons, it's time to get back to catching up on processing. Here is a Saturn in good seeing from March 29. Rhea is at about 3 o'clock.

Saturn, Titan shadow transit, April 29

Posted By Paul Maxson

Hi all,

Here are a couple of images of the above transit. By the time the transit started, Saturn was over the hot roof of my house.

Jupiter June 16

Posted By Paul Maxson

Hi all,

Two shadows on Jupiter so, of course it was cloudy when I got up to image. Jupiter was just showing through the clouds so I decided since I was up anyway, I'd give it a go. I had to increase my exposures from about 25ms to 60ms, cutting my frame rate to about 17fps. That only allowed for 900 frames instead of my normal 2000. Luckily seeing was not too bad and here is my result. I see what looks like a reddish spot in the north polar area (bottom, right) and the new dark spot is prominent. I'm not sure what the brownish area is to the right of the dark spot. The two shadows are Io (right) and Ganymede (just coming on the disk). The moon is Io. Still trying to figure out the best settings to capture detail on the moons.

Saturn May 25, 2009

Hi all,

I'm pleased with how this Saturn image turned out. I used an IR image for the L layer in an LRGB image.

Ganymede-Europa animation July 7

Posted By Paul Maxson

Hi all,

This occultation was well placed for imaging for me this morning. Seeing was average and I wish I had used a shorter exposure. My tables said this would be a grazing occultation at my location, but as you can see, it wasn't. Still not disappointing. This was shot with the Mewlon 250 at F/35. I captured 22 frames between 0956UT and 1031UT, each about 2 minutes apart except where the two moons overlapped. I stacked 100 frames for each image, registered them in Maxim DL and created the animation in Animation Shop. I shot 3 sets of the planet afterwards, but that will take a while to get processed. For me, the next one I will try will be July 13, starting at about 945UT. Those will be Io and Europa.

Thanks!!

EM200 problem

Posted By Paul Maxson

Hi all,

I've got a weird problem with my EM200 mount. I turn it on and the motors are running fine and tracking. However the hand controller does not work, I press buttons and nothing happens. I also have the Filos control box from Heiko Wilkens which works only in three directions. According to his webpage, pushing the joy stick up controls the S5 switch on the Tak controller and that one does not work. The other three are working (for now?). I am wondering what my next step should be? I was thinking of sending the mount to Art to check out along with both controllers. He replaced the CPU on the mount twice about 18 months ago. This is frustrating as Jupiter season is getting hot and heavy!

Thanks in advance.
Paul Maxson

PS, the mount is about 4 years old.

Jupiter July 25.

Posted By Paul Maxson

Hi all,

I had great seeing conditions for this image, the pressure was on to process it to bring the seeing out. I hope I did.
