The DEBATE...not much of one.

Posted By Paul Kammueller

OK well we watched the debate with some equally leftish friends, and note that this was during the consumption of many beers, grin but the general assessment among us was that McCain was winning the debate.

I mean, Obama argued okay-ly on the grounds of general principles which was where he needed to argue from, and was able to counter most of McCain's accusations well enough, but McCain very well leveraged his whole experience angle with a lot of name-dropping and historical anecdotes. And we had the impression that Obama was pulling his punches and not being particularly aggressive. It seemed... 'tepid'.

"Obama Says McCain Is Right", (Youtube)

Yeah, those of us watching the debate saw that one coming a mile away. We were screaming at the TV for him to stop saying that, but he didn't hear us.

Palin and Couric

I noticed that too -- her performance was so pathetic you momentarily actually felt sorry for her -- until you realize what's at stake.

The world markets are watching

To see if the taxpayers of the USA are going to bail them out......

Well... the bailout will be funded by $700 billion in treasury bond sales -- which will be largely bought by foreign investors. So they would probably argue that it is in fact THEY who are bailing US out, rather than vice-versa. shocked

Link to the Pelosi speech

Posted By Paul Kammueller

I'm sorry but the "Pelosi made me do it" argument is so ridiculously weak. It's an election year and they know how the game is played as well as she does.

1) Republicans set the economic policies
2) The economy got sick
3) Republicans came up with a cure
4) And then by a 2-1 margin Republicans decided to shoot the patient.

End of story.

Predetermination

Posted By Paul Kammueller

Yeah this forum has been down this path a number of times. Suffice to say that if the future is so predetermined, then 'free will' is purely illusory: we are all automatons destined to make choices that appear to be 'free' but that in fact we are doomed to make as products of our upbringing, cultural influences and random personal life events. If your 'choice' can be known ahead of time, then it never really was a choice but rather a linear result of a predetermined chain of cause and effect.

On a more philosophical level, if this were the case it would make the whole exercise (creation, life, etc.) rather meaningless. What's the point of going through all this if the outcome has already been determined? What is the use?

For your consideration...

Here's a link to the source story with some video. Doesn't look like anything -- basically looks like someone took some Windex and just cleaned the middle of the window and left the rest dirty.

Obama and Nuclear Energy

Posted By Paul Kammueller

I used to be in general agreement with Jim on this, but from what I've read about the future of uranium supplies, it seems that we would only be setting ourselves up for petroleum II. We're swapping one finite resource for another. There has been massive underinvestment in uranium production to meet the world's nuclear supply needs. Already demand exceeds supply. China, India & Russia want to ramp up nuclear power and are trying to lock up overseas supplies. Nuclear power may get *very* expensive in the next few years, even if building plants were economically and politically viable in the first place. It looks like a non-starter and a moot debate point.

I noticed this coming out of the debate. Trying to drive home the notion that she represents all the hockey moms and so on -- came off as really patronizing I thought.

Fact Checking Palin's Claim

Posted By Paul Kammueller

It is an obvious sign of desperation from an increasingly desperate campaign. Expect the accusations to get increasingly shrill and increasingly outlandish as Obama's lead in the polls grows.
