Specifically, I'm in RMUCX, a NY tax exempt bond fund I thought secure. Morning star just changed there rating from 5 star to 2 star and says now "This is a risky volatile bond fund, but for the bold, will deliver"! Wow, what an outlook!?!? I could loose it all or recover?!?! I have lost 24% on this, not alot compared to some I know, but this was supposed to be safe!!! Hell, I'm a retired disabled vet, I don't have a dime to loose! CAN I loose all this? New York is in debt like Calif. Do I need to cut my losses and run?
Wish I knew what to tell you. 8O
The profile on it says that it invests at least 75% of its portfolio in investment-grade material, so one would expect it to be roughly 75% 'safe' -- to 'lose it all' this being a NY muni fund you'd think NY would have to go bankrupt?? -- possible I suppose, but one would think (hope) it would be made whole by some sort of federal aid or something(?) -- naturally no one can be sure.
The credit crunch has been messing up the bond market in unprecedented ways and this is probably a manifestation of that, and I personally have no idea how long those disruptive conditions will persist. Who does?
That's a long, roundabout way of saying "I don't know".
