Losmandy G-11 DSC

Posted By Forrest Egan

OK, I'm asking Santa for some of the hardware to add DSCs to my Losmandy G-11.

I've heard that high-tick encoders can be ordered for the Losmandy DSC hardware...has anyone here done that?

Did the improve pointing?
What does it cost to upgrade?
Will they work properly with the current SkyCommander?

Thanks,
Forrest

International Astronomy Day - 19 April 2002

Posted By Forrest Egan

For 'International Astronomy Day' I brought my Orion StarMax to work so my co-workers could have a look at the Moon and Sun.

It was a really great experience!

Question for you Coolpix users...

Posted By Forrest Egan

Anthony,

Still images, of higher resolution, will be much better than 'Movie' mode on DSOs.

You might get acceptable results on the planets, using 'Movie' mode; however, I still think using a high-resolution and 'Continuous' mode would be better.

Join the Yahoo!Group 'digital_astro' to learn all about taking digital astro images with your Coolpix and how to process those images with various software packages. There are plenty of Coolpix users on the group (I have a 995) that can offer assistance.

You can find the link to Digital_Astro on my 'Links' page.

Which is more cost effective?

Posted By Forrest Egan

Before I put that C11 on a CI-700 I would put it on a Losmandy G-11. In fact...I put my C8 on a G-11! Sure it's a few dollars more...but IMO it's a better mount.

Either way, you can always add DSC or GOTO later.

So, I guess the real questions are:
Do you like your current optics?
And if so, do you prefer Alt-Az or GEM?

5" Tak APO v.s. 10" Meade lx-200

Posted By Forrest Egan

Vladimir,

I have a similar, though smaller, pair of scopes...a 76mm APO and a 200mm SCT. There are many nights the APO gives better views and I feel that my SCT optics are as good as any.

Stacking

Posted By Forrest Egan

Matthew,

Sounds to me like you were 99% there... :-)

The layer method needs to be changed, as well as the opacity.

If you had used Difference, you should have ended up with a black image (they would cancel each other out, this is how the 'digital' folks do dark frame subtraction)...if you had left it on Normal, you would have seen the top image (since the images are nearly identical, you wouldn't see much of a difference).

Try using Screen and, for two images, I would set the Opacity between 80% and 95%.

Remember, you want to stack two different images...don't stack the exact same image on top of itself.

Good luck,
Forrest

How long must we wait?

Posted By Forrest Egan

Michael,

I'm not sure about current stock. I ordered mine from Oceanside Photo & Telescope in early-mid September and had it in a little over 1 week.

Did you check with multiple dealers, to see if anyone had it in stock, before ordering? Has your card arleady been charged? If not, I would find another dealer.

Just my $0.02,
Forrest

Help me identify this mount

Posted By Forrest Egan

Well, it's not a CG-5...perhaps it's a CG-4. You wouldn't need a Losmandy dovetail, that's for sure.

You just need a standard CG-5 dovetail bar for your C8. I sold mine about 2 months ago, after I upgraded from a CG-5 to a Losmandy G-11 mount. I'm sure there's some one out there with one they're no longer using.

How do you get the Moons to show up?

Posted By Forrest Egan

John,

You hit the nail on the head! The moons are too dim to capture both properly exposed in the same image.

Same thing with Jupiter.
