Question about Image Scale

Posted By Steven Landry

Hi,
I've been observing for a couple of years now, Mostly with small scopes of less than 5" aperture. Every once in awhile I hear someone talk about "Image Scale", hinting that for the same Magnification (say 80x) an object will appear larger in a larger scope. I always assumed that the only thing that affected image size was magnification, but get the feeling I'm missing a core concept.

Can someone elaborate a bit on this for me, and provide the Mathematical formula, if one is available.

Thanks in advance,
Steve

A question for those opposed

Posted By Steven Landry

I've been on A-mart for a good while, but this is the 1st time I've wandered into this forum.

I thought I might pose a question to those opposed to the impending action in the Middle East. Please, Please, try to limit your answer to the specific question.

"What do you believe is the motivation of the United States to insist on removing Saddam Hussein from power, or at least confirming his disarmament?

If you can provide your logic in the response that would be helpful also.

I want to thank you in advance for responding. I have been pondering this for a bit and seek to understand your perspective.

Thanks again,
Steve

Seeing was poor to fair last night here in Washington, but I was able to get about 20 shots out of 80 to process.

Any comments are welcome, As I'm still learning lots every day.

cheers,
Steve

Small scope Mars 2003/08/18

Posted By Steven Landry

Taken with an Orion Astroview 100/f6 on a manual eq mount.
Nikon CP 4500 @ f5.1, 2x Ultima Barlow/Orion 10mm Plossl.
15 frames @ 1/30 sec stacked in Registax.

In the eyepiece Mars had a tunnel of Blue/Purple surrounding it. But this didn't show up on any of the raws. Any ideas?

Thanks!
Steve

I know there's no wildlife in the pic, but Mount Rainier was beautiful today. The fall colors are setting in.

Perfect City Scope?

Posted By Steven Landry

Hi Chuck,

I have the 5in Mak from orion on a manual eq mount. I love the planetary views, although I would get a sturdy mount and at least one drive if you plan on using high powers. My Apex 127 handles magnification well and came well collimated out of the box.
I bought it when I lived in the city and only had a balcony for viewing. When I moved to a more rural area, I couldn't bear to part with it

Good luck,
Steve

Phew!

You almost sold them all?? You are lucky.
I could see selling one or two and keeping your absolute favorite. But never sell them all!! I live up near Seattle, so I feel your pain, but on those rare nights when it's clear AND I'm not working, I fall in love with it all over again.

BTW, what refractor do you have?

That's a great pic! What kind of camera? Digicam? CCD?

I just got an Orion Astroview 100/f6 OTA for 250.00 and am enjoying the views immensely!

travel scope

Posted By Steven Landry

Mary,

Where are you at and where do you plan on travelling to? I ask only because if I had a N11 and was really interested in getting to lower latitudes for the mars opposition, I would seriously consider taking my N11 on a road trip down to arizona/new mexico.

Of course, this may not be possible based on your location.
