NGC 2070

Hi all,

Here is one of my images from when I used to live 'Down Under'.

NGC 2070, More commonly known as the Tarantula Nebula

The image is a 5 minute exposure with a Meade 416XT and my
5" f/5 refractor at prime focus.

in the configuration for the images. (Complete with several layers of

NGC 3372

One for the DSO-deprived observers in the northern hemisphere!
(Hey I know. I live there now!) <grin>

NGC 3372. Also known as the Keyhole nebula and the Eta carina nebula
A great object that is visible to the naked eye even in moonlight.

30 minutes exposure, Kodak Ektachrome 400.
5" f/5 refractor, prime focus.

The field is about 3* x 2*

Comet discoverer Hyakutake dies

Some sad news from the MPML board. (With apologies to anyone on this list that also recieves MPML messages)

I met Yuji in 1996 when he presented a talk on his scoveries at the Perth Observatory. He also autographed a photograph of the comet That I had taken. What I most remember about him however, was his modesty. He always said that it should not be him that was congradulated, but the comet. As he put it, "I only (?) found the comet. It is the comet itself that is putting on the great display."

Hi.

If what you are refering to is the bright region on the right-hand edge of the Moon, it is the crater Aristarchus, which is well known as one of the brightest features on the moon.

Help for 10", 12" LX200, C-11

Hi all! I was hoping that someone who has any of the above scopes could give me the spacing of the 3 mounting bolt holes on the base of the scope, where the scope attaches to the wedge. I am trying to find out if any of these three would be compatible with an existing 8" LX200 permant pier mounting plate.

Auroral display active

Hi everyone.

There is a major auroral display active now from Northfield Minnesota.

There is a very bright arc to the north, about 20* up from the horizon and there have been many very bright arcs reaching up to the zenith. About 30 minutes ago there were VERY fast moving streamers around the zenith and down towards the west.

Get outside and see it if you can.

Focal reducer question

Hi all.

I am looking for a focal reducer that will fit onto a large refractor. (Standard 1.25" or 2" focuser) I have tried the celestron and Meade reducers, but they will not fit.

Anyone have any suggestions as to where one suitable for a refractor might be found?

Test images with a 16" refractor

Hi all,

I have been experimenting with attaching a CCD to the old 16" refractor at the Goodsell Observatory. This is a massive instrument, with a focal ratio of f/15! It was build in the 1880's and still has the old weight drive. This makes imaging VERY difficult as there is no way of guiding. After a few nights I have managed to adjust the drive so that I can take 120 second images without too must drift.

It was taken with an SBIG ST-8, binned 2x2.

Here are a few of the first images. This one is of M57 and is a combination of 3, 120 second images, processed with Megafix.

The Straight Wall

Hi all.

A while back there was a discussion about the Straight Wall on the Moon. At the time I mentioned that just after 3rd quarter phase, it was possible to see the Wall as a bright line, rather than as a dark line as it appears when the Moon is waxing.

A few nights ago I was able to image the Wall as a bright line, and here is the image. It is a 0.01 sec image taken with an SBIG ST-8 CCD, binned 2x2, and attached to the prime focus of a 16" f/15 refractor.
