The Mice

Posted By Debbie Whitaker

Anyone seen NGC 4676 (The Mice) in a 15" telescope or less? I'm planning on trying for it this weekend. Another target I plan on viewing is NGC 6027 (Seyfert's sextet). I was wondering what power would be best for these faint fuzzies.

The Ghost Nebula (IC 5148/5150)

Posted By Debbie Whitaker

I found this beautiful round planetary in Grus last month. It is large at around 120". I observed it with my 22 Panoptic and OIII filter. The filter really helps bring out the nebula on this planetary. Without the filter, this planetary looks rather "ghostly". It is rather low in the sky at -39 degrees but well worth the effort to find. It was on Doug Snyder's Seasonal Best Autumn planetaries. Anybody up to the challenge?

Favorite Barred Spiral Galaxies

Posted By Debbie Whitaker

Ah, galaxy season is upon us again. This year I want to hunt down some barred spiral galaxies. I'm looking for some favorite barred spiral galaxies to view this fall. At the top of my list are NGC 1365 and NGC 1097 in Fornax. Anybody else have any favorites worth hunting for?

Imaging with a Super C8 Plus

Posted By Debbie Whitaker

Hi,

I've owned a Super C8 Plus for about 17 years. I was thinking of trying to do some imaging with this telescope. The optics are rated at 1/10th wave according to my certificate. The optics are in great condition.
I have the following questions.

Will I be able to get some decent images with this telescope once I learn how to focus?

What other issues do I have to deal with with a SCT?

Would it be better to buy a motorized focuser to ease the pain of focusing?

I don't think the mirror shift is too bad but is this an issue?

Thanks,

Debbie

Is a 2.7" focuser really necessary?

Posted By Debbie Whitaker

I plan on eventually doing CCD and/or digital astro-photography. Would a 2" focuser be ok or do I need a 2.7" or 3" focuser. I never plan on doing medium format astro-photography.

2" Diagonal for SCT

Posted By Debbie Whitaker

Does anybody have any preferences for a 2" diagonal on a 8" SCT? I could use my TeleVue Everbright diagonal but I want to keep it in my refractor to protect the OTA from dust. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

SBIG STV

I was thinking of buying a STV. Any comments on this product? I want to ease into CCD imaging. I thought this would be a good start.

2 inch Visual Back for 8" SCT

Posted By Debbie Whitaker

I have an 85' Celestron SCT with a 1 1/4 visual back. I'd like to use a 2 inch diagonal with it so I can use my Nagler and Panoptic eyepieces. Can I get a 2 inch visual back for my 8" SCT and if so where do I get it? I've checked the ATWB website but didn't find anything.

Thanks,

Debbie

Space Shuttle Flyby

Posted By Debbie Whitaker

WOW! The space shuttle flew over St. George UT this morning.
It looked like a bright fireball at 6:56 MST. I wonder what the shuttle's elevation was as it passed overhead?

A few questions about Digital Astro-photography

Posted By Debbie Whitaker

I'd like to buy a Nikon Coolpix 5000 and I have a few questions.

1. Any books available on digital astrophotography?

2. Should I try piggyback wide field astrophotography before
prime-focus afocal digital astro-photography.

3. What effect does light pollution or moon have on digital astro-photography?

4. Can I use my laptop computer to focus the camera?

Thanks,

Debbie
