Bad way to sell telescopes

Posted By Jeff Peronto

This past weekend on the HSN/America's Store shopping network a Meade representative, Tom Pigott, was hawking a 4.5 inch Meade telescope. During his pitch he showed a picture of the "face on Mars" taken by the Mars orbiter. He made the claim that the Meade telescope being sold would be able to see it just like in the photo. He also displayed planetary photographs that could have been taken with the Hubble, indicating that planets would appear just as the photographs showed. What can be done to put the truth back in the advertisement of telescopes? The whole hobby suffers from this kind of false representation. Doesn't HSN or Meade care what is said to sell telescopes? I guess with this type of presentating, they don't! We need to let those companies that resort to these deceptive practice's and falsehoods know that that this can not be condoned and especially since it was done on national television. No wonder this hobby is graying.

Lomo optics and Apogee's APO

Posted By Jeff Peronto

On another forum comments were made about the quality of the lenses used in the new Apogee APO's by a vendor who uses the same optics. The statement indicated that the Apogee optics were second run and of inferior quality. As one of the first owners of this scope, I was concerned about such statements. Lomo has since answered these comments and set the record straight about the quality of Apogee's optics. Each scope comes with its own test report which shows that my lens is better than 1/9 wave PvT and about 1/30 wave rms. I have included the link to Lomo's response so those people who have read the original misguided statements. These APO's have wonderful optics that should be considered if you want this quality level.

Apogee APO test report from Lomo

Posted By Jeff Peronto

Since there has been so much talk about quality, gentleman agreements and factory seconds, I thought that as Jim suggested, let's take a look at the actual test of the optic that came with my new Apogee APO. Hopefully this will settle the allegations that this is not Lomo's best. If you feel that way, please post the test that came with your Lomo optic from another source that we can compare. For comparison, please look at this web page: http://forum.astronomie.de/phpapps/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=326292
This gives interferograms for similar objectives of other brands.

Comet McNaught with Tamron

Posted By Jeff Peronto

Here is a very basic shot of Comet McNaught taken with a tripod mounted Canon 30D at ISO 640. The lens used was a Tamron 300mm F2.8 with a 1.4x extender. It was a very windy night and not as nice as last night. With snow coming, this is probably it for us.
Exposure was 1/50 of a second.

Another Comet McNaught shot

M81 First Light Image

Posted By Jeff Peronto

This is my first image with an SBIG ST-8 that I purchased used. It was taken with a 10" F/4.5 Newtonian with a Baader Coma Corrector and exposed for nearly five hours. It has a little too much noise and is indicative of the poor seeing at the time. Sean Walker helped me with the processing and brought out most of the info in the original files. Any comments or suggestions would be very much appreciated

My Second Image M51

Posted By Jeff Peronto

Here's my second image from my newly purchased ST8 from last night. Taken with the same setup as my M81 image, it has a little better stars and somewhat less noise, despite the high outside temps. The photo is made up of eight 1200 second images. My chip is ABG so I need a little more exposure to get the information collected. If you have any comments about my modest attempt please feel free to give them.

Comet Holmes/Canon 20D/ Tamron 180mm

Posted By Jeff Peronto

We finally had a clear night after way too many cloudy nights. Finally there was a chance to get image data. This shot is a stack of nine three minutes subs, taken with a Canon 20D and an but great, Tamron 180mm F/2.5 lens. The subs were too short to bring out the tail easily but the stacking helped. The subs were taken at 400 ISO to keep down the noise, but now I wish I would have done ISO 800 for ten minute subs. None the less, I had just enough data to put together a decent image. Now it's cloudy again. Go figure!

Mars 7/29/03

Mark,
You have a very fine image which looks like it was taken at about the same time as mine. My shot was taken with an MK67, 2.5x powermate, and Toucam with Baader filter. The seeing was only average from northern Illinois where I took the image.

Mars Animation

Posted By Jeff Peronto

I'd love to see the animation, but I only get a static image when I access the page. Do I need any particular software to view it?
