Apogee 80mm finder scope

Posted By Jorge Morales

I need to add a finder scope for 80mm Apogee and want to get some opinions. Also, this scope came with no instructions and the folks at Apogee have not been much help.

How the heck would you mount the guide scope anyway? There do not seem to be any holes for a dovetail? On my old C8 there were mounting holes for accessories. Actually there is one small hex head screw on either side of top center line (where you would expect mounting holes to be) but only one hole? Usually you would have at least 2 screws to secure a dovetail?

My plans were to use this scope and then make it a guide scope/finder on larger instument. Anyone have idea were to get mounting/alignment rings for it.

Need some advice on a visual back C9.25"

Posted By Jorge Morales

Hi Guys,

Finally got a mount for my 9.25" OTA (Ultima forks) and now need to add a visual back, diagonal and some eyepieces I am not sure which way to go. Give me some suggestions and what has worked for you. Also, which is best set-up for use with f6.3 corrector?

Should I get Astro-Physics/Lumicon type 2" visual back and
use "regular" (refractor style) type 2" mirror diagonal?

Or, a 2" SCT specific mirror diagonal that threads into back of
scope?

I am going to do just visual now but would like to try photo later. Also, I want to make sure the thing can be brought to focus correctly.

Thanks

Prices on AstroMart

Posted By Jorge Morales

Is it just me or does it seem that a good many folks on AstroMart have either forgotten or are unaware of the concept of USED? I keep seeing people post stuff at RETAIL prices and above and/or they'll take $10.00 off RETAIL like its some big favor they are doing the world.

I am sure to get a bunch of flame mail for this (asbestos suit now on) but geez. You buy the suff retail use it fo god knows how long and then try to pawn it off here LNIB cause you saved the box come on that is just B.S. As a rule of thumb MOST USED crap is automatically 25%-50% off (eBay auction not included of course). Maybe I'mjust old fashioned and I know there are some folks who offer genuine deals and feel like I do but It just seems this is turning into AstroBay. Give me you feeling on this am I being too nieve?

P.S. funny I see some stuff for sale here that does't sell and then gets posted on eBay by the same dozen or so individuals.

Who is using 2" accessories on a C9.25?

Posted By Jorge Morales

Hi guys,

I just got an AP 2" adapter that screws into the rear of my OTA because I want to use 2" eyepieces if I can. I plan on using that with a 2" refractor style diagonal, 2" barlow and UO 25mm and 40mm Konig eyepieces. My questions are as follows:

1. Anyone running a simmilar set-up? Any problems, tips etc..
2. What should I do for higher power eyepieces? How are UO 1.25 Konigs? Should I stick with some type of plossl? Money is an issue!
3. Do you think there will be any problems bringing objects into focus with this type of setup?
4. What is the deal with these $200.00 - $300.00 2" diagonals?

Thanks in advance

P.S. Anyone have any weights for a losmandy counterweight bar assembly or AP Maxbright they want to sell? I have the bar (picked up used) now I need the weights.

Re: 12vdc Dew Removers - are they just hair dryers

Posted By Jorge Morales

What did you think they were? Do you think some guy in china set up a plant, had molds made, etc.. to build dew removers for the .0001% of americans who are astonomers and who happen to use use dew removers.

Need opinion on AstroMart deal gone bad

Posted By Jorge Morales

Hi Guys,

I recently had an AstroMart deal go real bad on me and want to get some objective opinions. I have bought and sold many items and honestly this is the first deal that has gone bad, which is GOOD I guess. Mostly I have met real nice, honest folks so far.

Here is the deal I replied to an ad for a AP finder bracket and aked if PayPal was OK answer was no (flag I know). But guy was in same state, seemed OK and had good references so I did deal. Sent out Cerified Funds to him and here we are 2 weeks later and no finder bracket. I have been emailing him and trying to work out but guys last few emails basically have said "TOO BAD" I shipped it and thats that. But he refuses to provide proof of delivery or do anything for me. Furhter this guy goes ahead and leaves me negative feedback because I left feedback saying he did not complete deal (THE TRUTH).

Its a small amount and I was even willing to split it with the guy but now he is blowing me off and is beligerent. What would you do next?? Can't beleive he's gonna make me sue/report him to USPS for fraud but now I am really getting mad.

Looking for ellusive FOAM!

Posted By Jorge Morales

Hi Guys,

I needed a way to transport my Celestron Ultima 9.25 from home to some dark sky locations in the car so I picked up a nice plastic storage trunk at Target with wheels and hinged lid that fits my OTA and forks perfectly. However, I need to line the trunk with some foam to cushion the scope and cannot seem to be able to locate any. Especially at a good price. I found some internet sites selling 2" - 4" acoustic foam but they want an arm and a leg for it. Anyone know where to find some source for cheap foam? Best I have found is 1" mattress liners at some of the local retail stores but that is really too thin.

Thanks

AstroMart deal gone bad, Part II

Posted By Jorge Morales

Well, a follow-up to my AstroMart deal gone bad story from January. I can not believe how some people can sleep at night. How can anyone involved in our relatively small hobby be so completely deceptive and unscrupulous and devoid of morals and honor? Considering all the nice people I have done business with on here and or interacted with I am just really disgusted with this individual and the blemish he puts on the AA community.

Summary Recap (very abridged version to save space):
Dec 14, 2002 replied to ad for AP finder bracket
Dec 17, sent certified funds to pay for item
Dec 24, emailed asking about shipment had not received
Dec 27, emailed again asked to check status
Dec 28, asked to check with USPS (we are in same state)
Dec 30, emails me saying he shipped to wait more time
Dec 31, I ask for proof of delivery
Dec 31, Leaves false and slanderous feedback on AstroMart alluding that I got item and am lying about it
Dec 31, I leave feedback indicating person is not willing to provide proof of delivery or accept responsibility
Jan 2, 2003 I post on AstroMart asking for advice with out using names guy goes nuts and emails me about a dozen times using slander, questioning my "manhood?" etc..
Jan 3, I guess shamed from AstroMart replies changes tone and asks for 30 days to file claim w/USPS
Jan 3, I agree to give him till Jan 20th to provide proof of delivery, refund money or send out product.
Jan 13, emails me asking if package ever arrived, NO
Jan 13, asks me to make out letter stating I never got and mail to him. I state I will gladly comply
Jan 20, My letter goes out
Jan 25, claims never got my letter
Jan 27, I send 2nd letter w delivery confirmation
Jan 30, USPS shows 2nd letter delivered
Jan 31, Guys claims never got letter although USPS shows delivered to his address???
Feb 03, I send 3rd letter certified
Feb 12, Letter sitting in his local post office unclaimed (here is USPS claim number 7002 0510 0000 5107 5308)
Feb 12, I again ask for my refund, proof of delivery or product
Feb 12, Guy emails saying "I have not gotten any mail from you, and if you have something signed please tell me who signed it. Since we both know that I never signed more did anyone at this address sign for anything from you"
"Tarnishing my rating, and now you want all of the money"
Feb 28, USPS returns my 3rd letter unclaimed.

If you read this far you must be as shocked as I am, how can a fellow AA be so down right deceitful and dishonest. I try to help him with his claim it is just a ploy on his part to play this thing out which ends up costing me even more money in postage and certified letter fees. So what do we do with these unscrupulous people that tarnish our hobby and great places like AstroMart?

So one more time what do we do to protect others from guys like this? Maybe we should put up a forum to post / air out problems in dealings or to flag AstroMart abusers? What do you think?
