Nexstar GPS 8 for $1999

Posted By Gary Greenwald

This is almost too good to be true - is Celestron getting nervous ?

Is this not possible ?

Posted By Gary Greenwald

I want a 10" scope with Zambuto-like quality, with goto, with highest weight under 35 lbs. for under $3000.

Do they make Newtonians like this ?

If Meade can offer the LDX-55 10" for around $1,000, why can't I find the samething with improved image quality for an additional $2000 ?

Is the leap from Meade quality to Zambuto quality that costly ?

Thanks

New Celestron Mounts

Posted By Gary Greenwald

I think Celestron is on drugs - instead of offering these very expensive scopes, they should be offering a 9.25 Nexstar GPS or a GOTO 9.25 for under $2000. Would sell a ton of them.

Just my opinion.

Meade's Next Move

Posted By Gary Greenwald

Will Meade's next move be a sturdier mount for the heavier LXD models ?

I would gladly pay an extra $300-400 for a better mount with better gears.

Does anybody have any inside info ?

Making larger SCT's mobile

Posted By Gary Greenwald

Any ideas about how to make a 11-12" SCT more mobile? Any experience putting them on wheels ? Does this hurt collimation, or optics ?

I am thinking about buying one of these but don't want to lift more than 40 lbs. I can store my scope close to outside door and roll it outside, but don't want to ruin scope with vibration.

Assuming that it can be done, why would I pay $3000 for an 11" Celestron when I can get a Meade 12" for same price? Is the Celestron a higher quality machine ?

Thanks

Konus Equipment

Anybody familiar with this company ?

Their stuff, for the money, looks impressive.

Is this Chinese made with good QC ??

Are their mounts capable of handling the weight ?

New Celestron Mounts

Posted By Gary Greenwald

Does anybody know if the new mounts are more sturdy than the Meade mounts, and will actually support 30 lbs?

I think Celestron has made a brilliant move in offering the 9.25 on an inexpensive goto - should sell a zillion (a zillion and one including me)

Thanks

C11 vs Starmaster 11

Posted By Gary Greenwald

The GPS C11 offers so much more than the Starmaster 11(GOTO, tracking) for about the same cost, why would I buy a Starmaster?

Are the optics THAT much better ?
Would I see that much more ?
Is it strictly planetary ?

I have not looked through either - closest is a Meade 8 and 10" - which was not impressive.

Thanks for your advice.

TScopes

Posted By Gary Greenwald

Does anyone have experience with TScopes ?

These dobs look like steals to me and the owner sounds like a great guy.

Are these optics Starmaster quality at 1/8 wave ?

Any experience would be helpful.

Mount Standards Question

Posted By Gary Greenwald

When a mount says it can handle a certain weight, does that include the counterweights ?

For instance, the new Celestron mounts claim they can handle up to 30 lbs. The 9.25 weighs about 20 lbs. so you would think the mount would handle it well. But don't you need an additional 20 lbs. in counter weights to offset the 20 lbs. of scope ? This would push the total weight to 40 lbs, well beyond the capability of the scope.

Thanks
