Fork mount - GEM

Posted By Erlend Langsrud

Celestron SCT's come with fork mounts or German equatorial mounts. Why? Which one is better?

The GEM versions seem to be somewhat cheaper

Why do some very avid amateurs mount their SCT OTA's on large, expensive equatorial mounts? Are these mounts better than top notch fork mounts?

Vixen GP - SkyView PRO

Posted By Erlend Langsrud

According to Orion, their SkyView PRO mount "is every bit the equal of venerable Japanese-made mounts but at less than half the price."

Does this mean that the SVP mount is similar to Vixen GP (or even GP-DX)??

Camcorder Jupiter

Shot through the eyepiece of an old C-11 with a handheld digital camcorder. 80 images stacked.

Not nearly as good as most pics on this site, but what the heck...at least it's mine!

Check it out:

Please read & tell me what you think. I don't think it's so bad at all, all things considered.

I read a lot of different papers and try to use common sense. I think it's particulary interesting to read the papers I disagree with the most, as long as they are informative and well written.

SCT's

Posted By Erlend Langsrud

Two simple questions:

1. Is the Celestar 8 Deluxe scope taken out of production? I never see any ads.

2. Do Meade or Celestron still produce f/6,3 SCT's? I guess these scopes should be good for (unvignetted) wide field and astrophoto.

William Optics 62mm "Semi-APO"

Posted By Erlend Langsrud

What is it?

ED refracor?
Old fashion achromat?

The $250 price is too good to be true, or what?

bought a lxd55 ar 5 "......shud I be scared

Posted By Erlend Langsrud

Congratulations! Don't be scared, be happy!

Meade is a big company who sell tons of scopes, so they are bound to be mocked by hard-core amateurs who wants to stand out in the crowd. Much in the same way that computer-nerds prefer Linux to Windows.

Okay, so I guess they're not Zambuto, but the Meade scopes i have looked through (ETX125 & 10"LX200) seemed to have very good optics.

Having said that, I must admit I feel a bit puzzled when the ads say that the 10" lxd55 is ideally suited for CCD imaging. Don't you need something like a G-11 for that??

I'm pretty much a beginner, so don't take me to seriously anyhow.

Again, I congratulate you!

veiwing Jupiter /Equipment

Posted By Erlend Langsrud

Here's an image shot with a camcorder through my 5.1" f/5 cheap Newt. I can make out some more detail through the scope if the air is very steady, but most of the time I don't see much detail at all.
The details on Jupiter are not very small, but low in contrast (at least in my scope), so it takes time and effort to recognize them.

Increasing contrast is what image enhancement is all about.

6 inch f/5 problems

Tube currents sometimes produce "funny" effects. What brand is your scope anyway?
