What to buy?

Posted By James Milling

I know this is an old story and a heated topic.... I've got about $3000.00 to spend and I need help! Ok, here's the details- Live in Chicago burbs, ie poor to ok skies. I'm new but like to have the best I can afford, and have been view for over a year now even though I have a Meade Ds-2114 Reflector (please be kind). I know that I should spend money on EPs but please.... Meade Mak 7" sounds very nice. I like the planetary views, nice to show kids and all.... Will I get bored? Seems like the right choice for area I live in for backyard viewing? Goto viewing, I know I am spending a lot of money for it but I can't find simialar Mak scopes without it with a nice mount and tripod? What's the easiest route to a great scope for my area? Please help! Jim

10

Posted By James Milling

Almost done with my 10" dob project, seems like the closer I get the more that goes wrong! Okay here goes, I'm trying to set the correct distance for my primary. When I do a rough site measurement, do I rack my focuser out or in? I tried the middle, while focusing on a wall indoors (it's cold tonight in Chicago) about 80' away. Went outside and can't see anything! I'm very new to this so hope I can get this done. Thank, Jim.

P.S. Just got done ready forum on "How far is infinity?" might be a help but does anyone have a simple solution? I know primary is about an f6 10". Thanks

Books

Ok, I'm new and try to read as many of these threads as possible but I'm getting confused jumping from one to another. So are there any available books to read up on optic types (ie Nagler, Plossl, Radian etc)? Thanks Jim Milling

Digital camera astro photos

Hope I am on the right track here. Details are as follows.
10" f5.6 homemade Dob.
JMI 2" focuser
Digital Rebel XT Slr camera
T-mount camera adapter
Televue 2" focuser - t-mount adapter

Scope has performed great visually.
With camera mounted, the focuser racks all the way in and focus is clear at about 200'. All else is blurry.

Questions are, due I need to move the mirror or can I get some type of focal extender, as I think the camera body can't get close enough to the focal point. No eye pcs are being used, although I do want to go that route down the road. Think this camera will be very useful as I took the attached with just a 300mm telephoto lens with a little enhancement and a shaky tripod. Thanks, Jim

Eye Pc

Posted By James Milling

I have a 10mm Super Planetary eye pc I purchased several years back that I rarely use. Is there much demand for these? I am tempted to put it up for sale but if I'm not going to get close to what I paid, I'll just hold on to it. I've tried to search for related info and can't find anything. This is not ment to be a classified, more to get an idea of the value of what I have I guess.

What to buy?

Ok- I have a confession.... I have an unfinished 10" f/6 (not sure of quality), dob I've been working on. Should I save the $3000.00 now, finsh the 10" dob and see how I like the big bucket? All I need is a spider, secondary holder and another adult (wife will have no part of it) to set the primary at the correct distance. I guess I should have mentioned this before!!! Thanks Jim.

Ps Where can I get a spider?

I want to thank you all for the great information. I have decided that I should spend the next month finishing my 10" dob so I can see what a larger aperture is going to do for me. Once I have experienced that, I should be able to decide on High end dob, Schmidt-Cass, or Mak? At least I can begin to know how to narrow my search. Once again thank you to all that helped. Jim
