Changing dovetail on M603

Posted By James Robinson

Hi, I'm considering replacing the Vixen dovetail bar on my Intes-Micro M603 with a Losmandy one. Before I remove the screws could someone tell me if they are attached to nuts on the inside? In other words will removing the screws result in loose parts on the inside?
Thanks
Jim

TV85 and OIII filter

Posted By James Robinson

Hi, I'm interested in TV85 owners opinions of OIII filters. Specifically, are images too dim given the limited aperture? Also, does anyone have experience with the 2" OIII filter being sold by the binoscope company on Astromart?
Thanks
Jim

Red tailed hawk?

Posted By James Robinson

This isn't a great picture, I'm new to this and was hand holding a digital camera afocally over the eyepiece of my TV85. This hawk was high in a tree probably 1/4 mile away. I've tried to identify it using Sibley Guide to birds, my best guess is a juvenile Eastern red tailed hawk. I'd appreciate your opinions regarding identification.

The photo was taken Dec 27 in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Ghosting with Expanse EP (6mm)

Posted By James Robinson

Hi,
I received a complete set of Orion Expanse eyepieces for Christmas. I had them out last night and found the 20, 15, and 9 to be o.k. for the money. They might displace my plossls, time will tell. However the 6mm has the worst ghosting I have ever seen. The moon ghost completely blocked out the middle 20% of the field of view. Is this a general problem with this EP or did I get a bad one?

6mm Expanse and ghosting - easy improvement?

Posted By James Robinson

Hi, well it's cloudy here and will be for a while so this is a (mostly) untested theory. I unscrewed the bottom section of the 6 mm expanse and was surprised to discover that the inside of the eyepiece tube (upper portion) is very shiny. This can't be good, particularly with the negative element in front of it. I had some protostar paper handy and have now lined the inside. This might not eliminate the ghosts but can't hurt and is easy.

I've attached a photo, the e.p. on the left has been flocked.

GM8 adequate for a C 9.25?

Posted By James Robinson

Hi, I'm looking for a new OTA for my GM-8 mount. I realize that is the reverse of a normal situation but I have the mount. Currently it holds a 6" Mak and I want more aperture.

Is the C9.25 + GM8 a good combo? What does a C9.25 weigh fully loaded? Are the graphite tubes lighter? I do not do photography but like a steady mount. If the C9.25 is marginal I might go with a 8" reflector for deep sky and keep the MAK for planets.

Thanks for your opinions,

Jim

Source for premium 8" mirrors (RF Royce?)

Posted By James Robinson

Hi, I'm looking for a premium quality 8" f/5 or f/6 mirror. I have found that many of the premium suppliers do not make mirrors that small. I did come up with 2, RF Royce(rfroyce) and Lightolder Optics (lightholderoptics). I would appreciate any feedback from owners of these mirrors, or pointers to other sources.

Thanks

Panoramic & Telpod head question

Posted By James Robinson

Hi,

Anyway to adapt a panoramic head to fit on a standard photo tripod? I think this is possible with the telepod but I can't see anyway to do this with the panoramic. The tripod head provides the azimuth bearing. Is there an adapater available to make this work?
Thanks
Jim

Snowy egret

Posted By James Robinson

I am going to attempt to post some photos I took at Hilton Head last week. This is my first attempt at digiscoping, looking at all the great photos in this forum was motivation to try. For the most part the photos are unedited shots with a Televue-85 + William Optics 28mm + Coolpix 990.

Here's the first, a snowy egret.

Anhingan juvenile

Second of the Hilton Head series. A (possibly juvenile) Anhigan. There was a rookery near the condo I was in, this bird hung around all day.
