Orion XT8 vs. off-brand 10"

Posted By tom conti

I am looking for a good first telescope for my self (30 years old). I've read a bunch of articles and many posts on this board. Many people lke this scope, but for about $80 more I can get a 10" off-brand from a website listed in a post by one of you guys last month. Looks to be a similar scope. What do you think? Another question, is the XT8 a good scope for astrophotography? Thanks in advance for the input!

astrophotogrphy question

Posted By tom conti

I own an Olympus C2100 Ultra Zoom digital camera. I am thinking about purchasing an Orion XT8 scope. Does anybody know if I can mount this particula camera on this particular scope? It's a great little camera, and I think it would take some good astropics after a lot of trial and error. Any comments/suggestions?

good scope for astrophotography?

Posted By tom conti

I am looking for a first good telescope. I had settled on the Orion XT8, but was told that this is not a good scope for astrophotography. As this is ultimately what I'd like to do, I'm kind of back to square one. Can anybody recommend a good scope for astrophotography in the $400-$500 range? Thanks for the help,

XT8 bad for astrophotography?

Posted By tom conti

I'm a bit discouraged by the post that said this was not a good scope for astrophotography. I had just about decided on the XT8 but now it appears I'm back to square one. Of course I want to see as much as I can out there, but I'd ultimately like to take picture of planets/nebuals, etc. Can anybody recommend a good scope for astrophotography in the $400-$500 range? Thanks,

need advice, ETX80

Posted By tom conti

Saw an ad here on astromart for a "like-new" ETX80. I believe the ad was posted today or yesterday. Seems like it might be what I'm looking for for astrophotography but I am not sure. Can anybody check this ad out and advise me on if it's a good deal or not?

Which scope to purchase?

Posted By tom conti

So I guess the question is, what is the best scope for viewing planets and deep sky objects in the $400-$500 range? @nd question, what are the deepsky objects actually going to look like? For me, $400-$500 is a pretty big committment and I just want to be certain that I know what I'm getting into.

a stupid question

Posted By tom conti

I know I've been asking a lot, but I'm trying to gather as much info as possible. What do you guys put an 8" dob on? Do you put it on the ground or can you by a tripod for something that heavy?

what about a used scope?

Posted By tom conti

Checked the classifieds here on astromart today and saw an 8" Discovery F7 DHQ for sale for $375. Is this a good deal? What kind of questions should I ask when looking for a used scope?
