Help, Tripod & Wedge or LXD55 for LX3?

Posted By Thomas Musser

I have an old AC drive 2080 LX3 without a tripod or wedge. A standard tripod & wedge will probably run about $200-225. I've seen people sell LXD55 mounts in the $450 range. I don't know which way is better way to go. GOTO vs long cord plug sure sounds attractive but I don't know how to retrofit 2080 OTA onto LXD mount. Does it work? Is it worth it? Anyone have knowledge and opinion about this would sure be appreciated.
Thanks,
Tom

Stiff LX focus knob

Posted By Thomas Musser

I have an LX90 that has a focus knob that is much harder to turn than my LX200. Anyone know if I can adjust & grease or need to get EZfocus kit or EZTelescope replacement?
Thanks
Tom

A good Grandma scope?

Posted By Thomas Musser

I'm trying to decide on a good scope for a 65 yr young, enthusiastic and budding astronomer gandma. I'm thinking ETX-125 or LXD55 AR5 but not sure about either. She wears thick glasses so I really don't know if refractor is better, same... Weight and setup ease is certainly an issue and I think GOTO probably essential for a while. Any opinions and insight would be appreciated.
Thanks all,
Tom

BV Comparisons

Posted By Thomas Musser

Hi All,
I've been trying to find bino comparisons that compare the views of various BVs but have only found verbal opinions. Does anyone know of any visual comparisons anywhere?
Thanks,
Tom

Which one are you?

Posted By Thomas Musser

Suppose...A. Nagler starts a company "BlueSky" and without any reference to himself or TeleVue, he takes a thousand Pans and Naglers and renames them "Econolens". The company offers "the highest quality eyepieces," for $79 for 68° and a variety of 82° widefield of the "highest quality" for $109. A friend shows you one and says they are really quite good and decides to order an entire set. How many "Econolens" would you order the next day? How long would the thousand eyepieces last on Astromart and would you be like your friend or decide only TeleVue will be in your eyepiece case?
I wish I could say I was like my friend more often than not but which one are you?

Denk OCS fit other BVs?

Posted By Thomas Musser

Hi All,
Does anyone know if the Denk OCS fits other BVs? I emailed Denk with this question and didn't receive any response :C so this is my last hope before I give up and don't buy one.

Binoviewer Performance Questions

Posted By Thomas Musser

Hi All,
My questions are probably too boring to many but I'm trying to understand many of the issues in the binoviewing arena.
Is performance a major issue?
What is it that determines the performance of a BV the most? Aperture, coatings...?
What is it that most determines which BV to buy? Optics performance, other features, manufacturer, warranty, cost...?
If we hope to attract others to binoviewing, offering them information that answers many of their questions seems a logical way to help. The reasons for my personal purchases are probably not the same as many others. Any help and opinions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
TomM

ST4x and ST5 Value

Posted By Thomas Musser

Hi All,
I hope no one takes offense at my posting this question here. I have an ST4 and ST5 (w/CPU and tracking box)that I'm considering selling. They both have HQ flip mirrors. I'm wondering what is a reasonable price to ask for them. If someone is familiar with them and their current value I would very much appreciate some input.
Thanks,
Tom

A good Grandma scope?

Posted By Thomas Musser

Thank you all very much for your insight. It's great to be able to come here and get other valid perspectives. I guess the wise thing to do is discuss the different options with "Grandma" before getting her a scope...so much for surprises in a box.
Thanks again,
Tom
