TV 2.5 X Barlow

Posted By Cam Hui

Recently I saw an item labelled Televue 2.5X barlow on eBay. I asked the seller if this was a Powermate and he had no idea what a Powermate was.

Does anyone know if Televue ever made a 2.5X barlow?

Dew Heaters & Cool-down

Posted By Cam Hui

This may sound like a stupid question: If the point in cooling down an instrument is equalize the temperature of the objective and tube to the outside temperature, then isn't using a dew heater counterproductive and degrade the image?

Air Travel with a Kendrick

Does anyone know how you air travel with a battery (e.g. Kendrick)? Batteries are restricted equipment and cannot even be carried as checked baggage.

Traveling with a Telescope

Posted By Cam Hui

Hello Group!

Has anyone gone on a long, multi-day trip with their their mount? I
have a GM-8 and Gemini with a 4" refractor. I have a Pelican case for
the mount head and electronics and a hard golf travel case for the
OTA.

We also have a 2-year old, a large (80-pound) dog and assorted
luggage to fit into our Toyota Highlander (the Toyota version of the
Lexus RX-300 SUV). It's not all going to fit.

Any suggestions? I am considering a Thule roof mounted carrier.

Colliminating a Newtonian

Posted By Cam Hui

I am the owner of a refractor and I am looking at Newtonians in a search for aperture. One of the topics that come up again and again is the issue of collimation.

1) How often does one need to colliminate a Newtonian?
2) How long does the process take?
3) How well do these scopes hold collimination? or what are the "triggers" that make you want to colliminate it?

Please answer with specific numbers. For example, rather than answer "not often" to question 1, answer "every 2 or 3 times I take it out".

Thank you and clear skies!

Focusers

Posted By Cam Hui

I recently saw that a manufacturer had advertised that they put a "low profile focuser", which some people have identified as Vixen focusers, on their Newtonian reflectors. What are "low profile" focusers?

Is there such a thing as a high profile focuser?

Falling USD and Prices (Attn: Herb)

Posted By Cam Hui

For those who have been following the financial markets, the USD has fallen in varying degrees in the last year. Let me pose a question to Herb or anyone else in the optical retailing business:

Do you expect any currency related price increases of imported goods, either from Europe or Japan?

Large Light Telescopes

Posted By Cam Hui

I am looking to upgrade aperture from a 4" refractor. Does anyone have any suggestions on any 10"+ telescopes, of any design, whose OTAs might weigh under 20 lbs or so?

I would like to keep the new scope on my GM8 mount, if possible, so that the entire rig is relatively portable. (Yes - I know that stated capacity for the GM8 is 30 lbs, but once you add mounting rings, finders, eyepieces, etc. you can get there quickly.)

Thank you and clear skies!
