Orion 80mm ED Focuser Question

Posted By Don Soria

Hello Group,

I have just received my Orion 80mm ED scope and wanted to hear from other users regarding the focuser. I am using a 2” William diagonal with a std. Meade 25mm plossl eyepiece. I observed that as soon as I angle the scope up there doesn’t seem to be enough friction on the focus tube to bring the eyepiece combination back in. Any insight as to how to adjust the focuser to add a little friction to the focus tube?

Any other 80mm ED users using bigger/heavier eyepieces in their scopes. What’s your favorite combination?

Thanks in advance, Don

Nisur Capella Mount

Posted By Don Soria

I'm looking for comments from users that have try this mount. What type of ota did you use on this mount. I'm thinking that it's would be a great "grab and go" set up for my 8lb. refractor. What say ye.

Thanks, Don

Need Help with a Birthdate for a C8

Posted By Don Soria

Hello everyone,

I just picked up a used C8 8" ota that has the gray body, starbright coating and orange Celestron badging. The serial number is 940631. Any clues out there on the age of my new baby.

The seller told me that the ota is coming off of a fork mount. And, I want to mount the ota using a dovetail bar for a LXD55 mount. I was checking out Celestrons newer ota's at Orion's store and the dovetail bar just screwed into the ota. But on mine, the two screws holes that are closer to the end of the ota are farther apart that the width of the bar.

Any hints as to how best to do this?

Thanks, Don

Secondary Mirror Center Mark

Posted By Don Soria

Hello, after acquiring all of the components for my son's 10" newt, we're starting to assemble the ota. I know why there's a center mark on the primary mirror. But is there a need to center mark the secondary mirror. Maybe to collimate this mirror with the focuser? In the grand scheme of things, is a good idea, would it matter?

Thanks Don & Galen 8)

How To Question

Posted By Don Soria

Hello fellow telescope builders, I wanted to tap the resource before committing to attaching my mirror to its mirror cell. I have a Novak 10” 9pt floating mirror cell with 3 hold down clips and a 2.5” thick glass mirror. Weight of the mirror is 15lbs.

In discussions with other’s as to how best to attach the mirror, some have said to remove the hold down clips and glue the mirror to the side arms. Others have said to glue the mirror down to the floating “plates”. And some have said to glue to both floating plates and side arms.

What is the best proven way to do this.

This is for a 10" newt, f5.5 ota.

Thanks, Don

Hi Walter, nice finsh on the tube. What did you use to trim off the edge of the tube. Did you also get it from McMaster Carr?

Thanks, Don

Meade ETX..... EC or AT??

Posted By Don Soria

I can't answer your question directly, but I can recommend a great ETX site. The url is: http://www.weasner.com/etx/menu.html. Mike has one of the biggest resource site for your scope. Check it out.
