This might be dumb, and maybe quite obvious... but I gotta know.
I've spent a great deal of time in photography, both professional as well as amateur and now am interested in amateur astronomy. Every camera lens I've ever used or have seen, reardless of focal length, diameter, etc., all have 'infinity focus'. Kind of set and forget when it comes to great distance.
However, telescopes need to focus regardless of the distance to the object. Why?

I have a few theories, but to save the guessing... I thought I'd ask here

I was strolling around a local pawnshop and this was sitting there. I hadn't given it much though till I saw these photos. It looked alot like the photos on Ad #211153.
The mount is almost identical (EQ, clamshell style), wooden storage box (dovetailed and quite nicely compartmentalized with felt linings), and refractor. The only name I could see was "Luxor; "77mm "910mm FL". It has 3 EP's, a diaganol (.965), another piece that sure resembled a 'filter wheel' but was for straight through viewing, and a screw on objective/dew shield. It was all white metal construction.
The store owner said the guy has disappeared and is going to put it out for sale. It is OLD!
Has anybody seen or heard anything about this?
It didn't look like a world class observatory scope, but a really fine looking antique. Thanks

Is it possible that an "ED" eyepiece can exist... for 64 dollars!?

Hi All,
What is the difference between these two?
From photos, it appears the mount is beefier on the LX200 as well as the ability for the Magellan GOTO thingy.
Is this correct?

Looking for some advice here...
It seems that a Meade Classic LX-200 sells (used) for about the same as the next size smaller LX-200 with UHTC.
For example, a 10" LX-200GPS with UHTC is about the same price as a 12" Classic LX-200.
So, which is shows a better, brighter image for the buck?
If someone has some first hand observing comparisons to share, that would be great!

Thanks all for the input... Than Roland for your expert advice.
My goal is for the best visual telescope I can afford. I'm not too interested in astrophotos yet, the learning curve is a bit too steep.
