You've received a lot of very good suggestions about your first telescope purchase. Here is one more suggestion of a slightly different type.
Before you spend your $600 on any equipment, spend $29.95 on Terence Dickinson's book, "NightWatch". Not only will it give you a better perspective on what "Backyard Astronomy" is all about, it will give you a good overview of the various options for your first scope and their pros and cons.
After you've read Terence's book, you will be able to judge all of this good advice for yourself.
