Diffraction Spikes - Refractor

In the January 2005 issues of Sky & Telescoope, page 150 is a photo of the double cluster in Perseus taken with a "Astro-Physics 6-inch f/7 REFRACTOR".

Why do the stars have Diffraction Spikes? I thought you only got those with a central obstruction (spider)???

Glass Transiition phase - Old mirrors/lenses

Livescience article (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13208990/) talking about new research into the ideal glass transition phase, mentions that "old, handmade windows that over the years have grown thicker at the base, as the molecules have slowly flowed downward due to gravity."

Could this happen to a mirror or lens if left in one positon too long??

My CGE has been been as low as 12F with no problems.

There is an "issue" with the DEC cable, but a replacment cable fixes the problem.

Celestron Tech Support is hit and miss.

There was a super outburst of Comet 17/P Holmes on the October 23rd
when it rose from around about 16th to 3.5 magnitude! Reports say it is an
easy naked-eye object in Perseus at ~3 hrs 50 min +50 deg.

Pull the cluch plate off and check the two bolts underneath, they can loosen and produce just the amount of "slop" you're talking about.

They are great. I used have to have my girlfriend help me carry out the LX200-12" very time I wanted to observe. Now all I do is wheel it out of the garage onto the patio. Since my garage is unheated, that really shortens the time till the scope reaches equilibrium.

Webcam or Canon D10

A webcam is great for the moon and planets, but you'll never be happy with the DSO images you get.

I have a 10D and it's amazing what you can do with it. Even 1 minute exposures - stacking 10 or 20 - gives images that are fantasic.

....But the 10D is 10x more expensive ($1500 for just the body) than a Webcam

Of course you can also you the 10D for "terrestrial" images too.
