How about a strip sketch?

Posted By Tim Price

Would anybody like to try a strip sketch of a Jovian equatorial belt (with or without the red spot) under good conditions?

I bet the detail would be very nice with some of the scopes used here. I would offer up my own effort but after 2 months (really) of cloud cover at my locale I don't know when I'll get a chance. It really has been a dismal last two months...oh well, sigh, etc..

Drawing: Materials and techniques

Posted By Tim Price

Hi all,

I've done a couble B+W starter drawings of Mars but would like to be able to do good color ones as well.

In one of my old storage boxes I had some colored pencils appropriate for Mars, and I bought an orange. So I guess I'm basically prepared to begin to learn. Anyone who would like to accelerate this process for me and maybe others, could you say anything about your pencils, papers, and techniques?

Yes, I've found some good posts by doing a search but I'm sure that there is more to say on the subject as well as that it would be nice to have a bunch of such posts all in one place.

Here's a Q: I saw a "China White" pencil at the store; would this be good for depicting the Limb brightening or do you use something else?

Thanks!

Tim

Sketch Mars 30

Used Photoshop for blurring pencil strokes and airbrushing color clumps. Erase tool to get SPC white.

Local conditions are less than ideal for me so I don't post photographic results here, but for some reason the results of Aug 1 were above my usual standard. You can see a fingerlet of the dust storm as well as (at least on my monitor) the bifurcated nature of the SPC in that the planet's orange limb reaches around the top of the SPC up to the rift.

Always hoping for a window smile

Sketch Solis Lacus Aug 28

Posted By Tim Price

I need to try this again when conditions are a little better. It strikes me as absurd that I would be sketching detail in Solis Lacus; but with Mars so huge this should make a neat memeory a few years down the line, right? smile

I'd love to see some of the artists here try the same task with better scopes, better skies, and better skills.

Mars Scope

If your local seeing is problematical for a big dob then I would recommend a 6" apo (if you can get one) or a 7" Mak-Newt (like an MN-76). Also consider the DGM 6.5" off-axis newtonian. It is supposedly refractor-like in the images it delivers.

I've also seen some spectacular planetary pics from the C 9.25. Some SCTs are less than ideal for planetary viewing...even when cooled and carefully collimated... but others can be fine instruments.

This is the heart of us amateurs, in my opinion. Beautiful planet, beautiful drawing. Just plain satisfying!

I always enjoy your observations Ron. Also your enthusiasm-- but when talking about Mars, well it is not so hard to be enthusiastic.

I have a drawing I made at the same time as yours in my C8. I'll post it in this thread before too long as you might like to compare. Just a beginner with the sketching smile

mars 07/29/03 - smudging experiment

Since my pencil work seems to be pretty coarse I used Photoshop's Blur Tool to ease out the pencil marks. Until I figure out how to get a nice and even color on the paper this blurring helps.
