If you have seen the new edition of S & T. , theres a new manufacturer of Fiberglass observatories, Clear Skys Inc
The dome is seven feet in dia. , with two piece shutter and base.
It appears to be a nice product , I have contacted these people, and they informed me the can ship in four to six weeks.The dome is 90in in diameter and the base some 112in.
The price seems to be reasonable at $4,500, plus shipping and crating.

I am thinking of building a 18in in F3.5. many guys
say it's too short, what type of problems do short focus flectors have, other then large secondary obstruction?

My 4.5 in ball telescope needed a mount, so I found a pedestal on Astromart, bought a 9.5in stainless salad bowl from K Mart, inside the bowl I used self adhesuive felt pads(6) and here it is!!!
The pedestal pipe splits in two, and everything goes in a stuff sack. It works great, and gets the scope off the picnic table.
This set works great for camping trips,when I leave the big scopes home for a rest.

Hi Guys
I have been an Engineer for some 25 years, and the clam shell design I do not understand,
If you think about professional observatories, domes were created because of the motions induced from the equatorial mount,RA & Dec, thus a dome.
The clam shell is a spherical roll off roof, whats the point.
V.S. a dome which is designed to minimise aperature opening to the telescope, and reduce the instruments exposure from stray light and wind, plus house the instrument,right.
When the clam shell design is open, it exposes everything 360 degrees to everything.
Additionally the clam shell is multi segmented,and I would be conserned about water(rain) and dust.
Please understand I think it's appearance is great, however, it's design, as it relates to the application is geometrically incorrect.
What am I missing guys!!!
