Telrad Reflex or Rigel Quickfinder?

Posted By Jay Skuban

Thanks in advance

Cheshire Wiggle

Posted By Jay Skuban

Great tool, love how it works. Only problem is when placed in the focus tube, there is too much play or wiggle. The other problem is, I've star tested the scope, put in the Cheshire and it's off, not lined up. Locked it down (to take out the wiggle) still not lined up. Unlocked, I can apply some pressure and get it to look like it should. Could the focuser be out of alignment? Do I lock it down, re-collimate to the Cheshire and then star test with high hopes? Figured a few of you needed more to think about than how to swat mosquitos..
Thanks in advance.

Star Chart

Posted By Jay Skuban

Any advise on star charts for field use. Sky Atlas 2000 Laminated Field version is looking like the winner so far, but the Deluxe version Laminated is tempting. Black on White or White on black? Old eyes are getting tired under red light and clear skies. Your comments would be welcome.

Thanks in advance,
jay

Black Out

Posted By Jay Skuban

With parts of the US plunged into a black out last night, I'm somewhat curious to find out about observing conditions in the local areas. In other words…how was it?

Time

Posted By Jay Skuban

What a wonderful time to be involved in astronomy. Congratulations to NASA and the President for engaging all to consider space an opportunity for our continued exploration. I look forward to the day, when I can share with my children the joy and wonder of watching a human being land on the moon once again. And if we go to Mars, I will stare with utter amazement and be overwhelmed with pride. While the questions still remain, how and how much. For today, I will enjoy the dream....

McNeil's nebula

Posted By Jay Skuban

Not intending to be pretentious, I picked up on a few news articles referencing the newly discovered McNeil's nebula. Amateur astronomer Jay McNeil made the discovery while imaging with a 3" scope from his backyard in western Kentucky. Near M78, the running theory is a newborn star (IRAS 05436-0007) is now lighting up the area. I believe this format would be a fitting place to offer a hearty congratulations to Mr. McNeil for his contribution to backyard astronomy.

15x70 Hand Held?

Posted By Jay Skuban

Interested in getting a pair of Oberwerks binoculars, but find myself still trying to decide between the 15x70 and the 11x70. I wear glasses, plan to use them to complete the AL Binocular lists under 3.5 skies and already own a pair of 10x50's. Not interested in putting them on any kind of mount at this point, realizing I'll end up propping them up against something when needed. Leaning towards the 15x70, but question if I'll be able to hand hold the extra magnification. What upper body strength there was, is now succumbing to gravitational forces. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Near Infrared

Posted By Jay Skuban

Been doing basic research on capturing (near) Infrared images with a digital camera. Turns out it is possible with proper filters (R72) and some post processing work. This is very new territory for me, so I may be way off base with this line of thought. But, I'm curious to find out if anyone in the group has tried this on astro-photos and what were your results. Seems to me it would be limited to very bright objects, lunar or planetary just to burn through the filter. But if it works, the results could be interesting. Thanks in advance, appreciate your comments.

Russell Optics finder diagonal

Posted By Jay Skuban

I know a few of you have posted information about replacing the stock diagonal that comes on Russell Optics finders. If you could give a quick description of what it takes to swap it out, I’d appreciate it. Looking for a little more aperture and the 12x70 Russell looks pretty good at this point, not to mention the price is right.

Thanks in advance,

Jay
