GM8CM8 for a G11

Posted By Larry Sauvain

Does anyone know if a GM8CM8 for a C8 will work on a G11 mount?

Useful CA

Posted By Larry Sauvain

Hope someone can help answer this question. And please, I'm not trying to start up any turf wars.

A little background. I currently own a pair of BNs and am pleased with them. But like most of you, I'm always planning my next upgrade. I've been thinking of purchasing the 30mm Echelon so I can get some more photons and keep the cost down by continuing to use my current BN OCA's. My question is on the 1 1/4 inch technology and not the 2 inch format. Since Uncle Al says that the maximum 1 1/4 inch CA is 27mm is there any benefit in going beyond 27mm (eg 30mm) CA for a 1 1/4 format binoviewer?

Focuser Opening

Posted By Larry Sauvain

Does anyone have a good technique for making an opening in an aluminum tube to mount a focuser? I can't think of an easy way to make a clean smooth cut.

Thermal Scarf

Posted By Larry Sauvain

Has anyone heard of using a thermal scarf while observing. No, this isn't a personal (usually female) article of clothing. It's made of a cork type of material and you supposedly wrap if around the circumferance of your mirror. Since the edge of the mirror cools faster than the center it is supposed to keep the edge and center closer to proper optical properties during the cooling process.

Focal Plane Location

Posted By Larry Sauvain

Its been 31 years since I made my last telescope (I'm that old) and have decided to make a Newtonian again. I'm having a lot of fun selecting the components but am having trouble deciding where to put the focuser. Does anyone know of a 'rule of thumb' where the mirror focal plane should be relative to the outside of the tube? I mostly use Radian eyepieces and haven't selected the focuser yet.

Orion 100 ED - Initial Evaluation

Barry,

Given that the focuser is B A D. Does it look like you could replace the Orion focuser with a quality unit like a feathertouch?

Tscopes?

Posted By Larry Sauvain

Alan,

I have a Farstar 15" with an OMI mirror. This is a more delux Tscope and I am generally happy with the quality of the scope. The price for quality is very good. But be aware. Ed can be pretty slow at finishing scopes. My experience may not be representative since it is more complex than the standard Tscope, but it took 15 months for me to get mine. Price and quality are great, delivery can be very slow. So if you order one, don't be in a great hurry to receive your scope. You might check the Tscope forum on Yahoo.

Barlow vs. high mag EPs

Posted By Larry Sauvain

Continuing this thread to the next logical question. Has anyone spend much time with either a quality barlow or powercore and Pentax XLs/XWs or the TV Radians. Is this too much glass or do you still get good images with this combination? The obvious reason to do this is cost. With a powercore or barlow you in theory could double the efl's of some very good eyepieces.
