New Celestron GOTO GEM SCTs

Posted By Malc Shedden

Astronomics is listing new goto GEM mounted SCTs from Celestron with "street" prices as follows:

8" $3,499.00
9.25" $3,799.00
11" $4,149.00
14" $5,799.00

but no other details or pictures, except the line "You've been asking Celestron for a complete selection of their top of the line Schmidt Cassegrains mounted on a beefy computerized German Equatorial mount, well ask and you shall receive...".

Anyone know anything about these scopes? There must be about $2600 mount in there...

The NexStar 14 (not yet available) and the CM1400 are both still listed, so the new scopes are not those.

Astronomics is also listing the CI-700 mount at $1295.00, so it would appear to be on the way out...could be an attractive mount at that price.

Re: pin-holes in Baader AstroSolar filters

I would toss it and start again.

It doesn't matter if its loose or has wrinkles, in fact its very difficult to avoid them.

You're only talking about a couple of bucks worth of film vs someone's eyesight (potentially).

If you've disassembled the focusser on a VX102FL or VX102ED scope, pls take a look at my message in the Vixen Forum!

Thanks!

FS-78 help...

Posted By Malc Shedden

Can anyone with a FS-78 tell me the distance from the rear of the dewshield threads (with dewshield removed) to the front of the objective cell?

Thanks!

SolarMax 40 and FCT-76 or FS-78

Posted By Malc Shedden

If you have a FCT-76 or FS-78 can you describe or post a picture of the adapter for the solarmax? Does it replace the dewshield, or fit over the end of it?

Thanks,

Malcolm.

Celestron Silvertops - advice(?)

Posted By Malc Shedden

Some of my 'silvertops' do not have Silvertops. Can anyone date or give any info about the odd ones out in the pic? (the odd ones are the 7.5mm, 10mm and 26mm) which all have:

a) Black tops
b) raised lettering, rather than engraved
c) Red lettering rather than orange.

The 26mm has a Celestron sticker and a -V- symbol on the barrel.

Any ideas ?

Thanks,

Malcolm.

The SKY POCKET Vs DSC Computer

Posted By Malc Shedden

It crossed my mind the other day that perhaps instead of buying a dedicated DSC for my CI-700 mount, it might be better (sexier...) to try a Win CE machine running The Sky Pocket version.

Anyone have any feedback?

TIA

Malcolm.

Why, oh why...

Posted By Malc Shedden

Why is it that (with the exception of the BF/30) all the Coronado blocking filters are incorporated into a diagonal??? It sure would make life easier for photography if there were no diagonal in the system, plus most everyone already has a diagonal - so we're having to buy something we already have.

Doesn't make sense to me unless its a product liability issue - if you were using your own diagonal its possible you could forget to use the blocking filter...

Anyone?

Alternative to double stacking

Posted By Malc Shedden

With all the talk of double stacking of etalons, I thought it worth pointing out that Coronado also make what is called a 'high resolution module'. On the Coronado website they say it is available for the Tak Sky 90 and pronto, but I'm pretty sure they can make them for any scope. This is a 40mm etalon and some additional optics that fits *within* your OTA. At $1795 this sounds like good option for those who have larger units for which the cost of double stacking becomes prohibitive (90mm's for example). This is an option I'm going to explore for my 90mm as there is no way I can afford another 90mm etalon!!

Just my $.02
