Finder scope question

Posted By Peter Madsen

I have an 8" dob, with a 6X30 finder on. I live in the suburbs, and can barely glimpse the milky way with the naked eye. Sometimes when I’m star-hopping I have some difficulties seeing the fainter stars I use, and sometimes have to use adverted vision to see them.

My question is: Would it help to get an 8 or 9X50 mm finder scope instead?

Thanks

To buy or not to buy binoculars?

Posted By Peter Madsen

Hi all

I have the opportunity to buy a pair of 15X70 binoculars. I already own an ETX90 and an 8” dob.

What I miss is something to use when I only have a short time to spend on observing like 15-30 minutes. The problem with the ETX is that it doesn’t have time to cool down, and I think that the binoculars might be a good choice. One other thing is that I don’t know how many things I will be able to see (have looked at Astronomical League Home Page’s binocular section and there seems to be quite some objects within reach of binoculars).

So my question is: Will the 15X70 binoculars (properly with some sort of support) be a good choice for quick peaks at the sky and how much will I be able to see?

Thanks for any info.

RegiStax 2 problem

Posted By Peter Madsen

Got a new computer with Win XP like the old one. Have installed both registax and registax 2, but when I try to load .avi into it, a message pops up saying: “Failed to start AVI decompression” and then another one saying: “access violation at address 004033FA in module ‘RegiStax2D.exe’. Read of address 00000000.”

What does this mean and how can I get RegiStax to work properly?

Recoating?

Posted By Peter Madsen

Hi

Need some advice about recoating of my 8” mirror. Turned the backend towards the sun, and what I found is showed on the picture.

There is some dust on the mirror, but can that make these reflections?

I think I need a new coating, but just want to make sure, so what do you say?

Thanks for any advice

Re: I Guess I'm Being Insincere...

I think it’s all about it not being a hassle, and not only viewing the same objects all the time. Right now I am doing the H400 list with an ST80. It’s so easy to set up (I have it mounted and ready to go) and some nights I only view 3-5 objects. The thing for me is not to make it a duty, but a pleasure, and that sometimes means only viewing a few objects for half an hour, or maybe not viewing at all.

Defect PST?!

Posted By Peter Madsen

Hi all

I am a new PST owner and have been very happy with the little scope.

But there might be one problem. The scope says some *click* sounds sometimes (sounds like its coming from the tube). It comes with intervals, which can be anywhere between 1 minute to 15 minutes. It sounds like breaking some thin glass.

Someone suggested that it properly is the two internal filters (can’t remember their names right now, etalon maybe?!) that rub together, and that I should get it exchanged, because it is a fault in the filter/scope, and that it might break totally at some point!

So my question: is this something to be concerned/worried about, or is it normal, and do other PST owners also get the sound (4 others that I have heard from don’t have the sound)? As I said, the image is normal and the tuning ring works (although it is a little loose)

toucam vsersus LPI versus digital cameras

Posted By Peter Madsen

You can actually get some very good pictures with the LPI. Try looking at this link for some examples http://koti.mbnet.fi/petrike/Updates.htm Why not try to get the best out of your LPI before buying something else. But, that said, I also think that the Toucam is slightly better than the LPI.

Baader Contrast Booster

Yes. Also to consider is the baarder neodymium filter, with is not as aggressive, but gives a more natural look color wise (especially combined with the baarder fringe killer filter).
