Basic Meade questions

Posted By Frank Mollica

I have a Meade 10" LX200 I bought it new in 1999. I've lost track of the advancements in Meade products, I would appreciate some information, or point me to a article that explains:

What are the major differences between the LX200 and the LX200GPS?

My Meade is in mint condition, literally not a scratch, what would be a reasonable selling price? I'm thinking about upgrading to the 14".

Thank You

Reticle Eyepiece

Posted By Frank Mollica

My 9 Reticle eyepiece crosshairs are not in the center of lens. I spent a couple hours trying to align, but just looking into the eyepiece, it's very subjective on when it's in the center. What is the easiest way to align?

Also, what is the Dew Shield of choice for a 10" LX200? The heated Kendrick strap looks nice, anyone have this and are there any other suppliers of heated dew shields?

Thank You

I took my first digital images Saturday night, mostly of the Moon and Mars. I was very happy with the images right out of the camera. I used a 10" Meade LX200, Scopetronics Max View 40, the Max Power to boost the lens and a 2X barlow, the camera was a Sony 717.

Reticle Eyepiece

Posted By Frank Mollica

I have a Meade 9mm Plossl illuminated Reticle Eyepiece, the crosshairs are not in the center of the lens anymore,(couln't figure out why my polar alignments were off, duh)is there any eay way to get it back exactly in the center? I tried just looking through the eyepiece and adjusting but that's a pretty subjective alignment.

I need to purchase a dew shield for my 10" Meade LX200, I like the looks of the Kendrick heated strap. Anyone using this, or are there other heated dew shield supplier worth looking into? Do you think the heated straps are better than a conventional dew shield, say the Meade.

Thank You

Question

I posted, or at least I thought I did, a thread with a couple of questions in the Meade forum earlier today. I also made a comment about taking some digital images. Did this post get deleted? If so did I break a rule?

Does anyone use this and what are your thoughts on it's performance? I want to use it for focusing digicam pics. with my 10" LX200. It is very hard to find actual user comments.

Accessory Cases

Posted By Frank Mollica

I've been searching the web for a well made large, (app. 24"X18"X6") aluminum accessory case to hold eyepieces, power units, filters,... There are literally hundreds to choose from, anyone have any favorites?
Thanks
Frank

15X for birding?

Posted By Frank Mollica

I'm new to the Bino bird watching hobby and am getting ready to purchase my first good set of bino's. After much research I'm going to go with the Canon Is. I will mainly be watching birds in my back yard, (blue birds, RB Grosbeak....)from 50 to 120 feet away. I am looking at the Canon 15 X 50 IS and 12 X 36 ISII. Is 15X too much magnification, how about 12X? I also am into Astronomy with a couple of scopes and a good set of 15X bino's would be fun to have when I don't feel like lugging out a large scope, but my primary use would be for birding.

Thank You
Frank

Sony Digital Camera

Posted By Frank Mollica

I have the Sony 717 which is the predecessor to the 828. I thinking about upgrading to the 828 when it becomes available, I'm also looking at the new Canon DSLR its only $900.

The 717 is an excellant camera and it takes great pics, I just ordered the Scopetronics Max View 40 eyepiece with and the Max Power TE, will be using it on a Meade 10" LX200, this is going to be my first attempt at Astrophotography.

I just found your website a couple of days ago and have learned a lot already. You have a great site.

QS9000 is for people selling to the automotive industry, it's basis is ISO9000 but it about doubles the requirements of ISO. Basically it's just a way for the big 3 to shift much of their costs to their suppliers. I won't even think of buying from any of the big 3 after being involved in this farce.
