filter slides and diffraction

Posted By Chester Flaxmayer

I was interested in a filter slide or the Moonlite focuser with the filter attachment.

Has anyone trying these types of items noticed any diffraction from the filter or slide being in the light path?

Thanks in advance

good observing locations

Posted By Chester Flaxmayer

has anyone ever seen a survey of good observing locations. I was thinking that there must be some sort of government/private survey run when they place an observatory. They must have some way of deciding before they spend all the bucks.

I was just thinking that it would be cool to know where to move for the best skies.

Refractor balance on Giro II with Binoviewer

anyone have a good idea how to balance this system.

The Bino is above the COG and the rail is to the right and you can't get a weight easily below the tube

TIA

Stupid refractor questions

Posted By Chester Flaxmayer

8O I have a series of questions about refractors and comparisons to other types of scopes.

1. When a SCT or Mak indicates 20% obstruction is that obstruction of area (Secondary area/total area)?

How does this affect the resolving power. The formula for resolving seems to hint that this is just a function of diameter.

2. When trying to determine what size refractor does one need to compare to a Mak or SCT in light gathering, is it a simple matter of light gathering of Mak's mirror minus light lost to secondary. ie 10" = 25Pi light and 3" Obstruction = 2.25 Pi light so left is 22.75 Pi light equal to square root of 22.75 or 9.5 inches diameter.

If these two ideas are correct, the resolving power and light lost due to central obstruction is miniscule in terms of the overall overall package and all is left is loss of contrast.

Now for the kicker.

Why do we lose contrast?

hope you can help me wrap my mind around this one

Anybody try the new Pentax XW ep's yet?

Posted By Chester Flaxmayer

I just bought one of the 10s and do not see any huge differences between my XLs and the XW but I did buy it to fill the gap between the 7 and the 14 XL so it is not a direct comparison

THe screw off cap is nice

Viewing RealTime via network.....Help????

Posted By Chester Flaxmayer

try installing the software on your desktop and then running your capture program over the network via the laptop

ie boot laptop and get it all set up and tell the desktop software to run the camera

if it can find the camera on your laptop, you should be able to run it that way
