Guiding Scope

Posted By Alex Carciofi

Hello
I own a LX200 8", and want to build a guiding system using a webcam and a guiding scope.
I'm kind of new in this hobby, so I need some advice about a good choice for a guiding scope.
Price is an issue, I don't want to spend too much money on it (no more than $150).
For example, I think that one of the ETX (ETX-70 or 90) would do a great job, but the problem is that it seems one can't buy only the scope, one have to buy also the mount, which would be a waste of money...

Any input?
Thanks,
Alex

Is it worth?

Posted By Alex Carciofi

Hello All
I just got my LX200 8", and I'm very tempted to buy the eyepiece set that Meade is advertising ($650 worth of eyepieces for $100).
Do you know if these eyepieces are good quality ones?
It looks a "too good deal" to me...

Thanks
Alex

Superwedge Latitude Range

Posted By Alex Carciofi

Hi
I'm from Brazil, and the latitute where I leave is 23 S. I frequently go to latitudes as low as 10 S.
Do someone here knows what is the latitude range of the Meade Superwedge?
By looking at the picture, it looks like it doens't go down to such low latitudes.

If this is the case, could someone suggest which wedge would be appropriate for my case?
Thanks!
Alex

Milburn Wedge

Posted By Alex Carciofi

Hi
I'm almost getting a milburn wedge for my LX200.
I've read several good reports on the web, but I did not find a good review on this wedge, about stability tests and stuff.

Would the users of this forum be willing to share here their impressions/opinions/tests about this wedge?
It would be very useful.

Thanks,
Aex

LX200 gone crazy

Posted By Alex Carciofi

Hi
I just got my brand new LX200 classic (bought at optcorp.com).
I used it for the first time friday night. Yesterday I was playing with it during the day, when a very strange thing happened.

I plugged the power cord, turned the LX200 on and the RA axis started rotating. I let it rotate for a while, but it would not stop. I turnet it off and on again several times and it would do the same thing!

After a while, I took it out of the tripod, laid it on the floor and turned it on again. It was fine.
After that, I went out observing and the telescope worked just fine.

I have NO IDEA what happened. Has anyone experienced a similar problem? Do you thing I should take it back to meade for servicing?

Thanks a lot,
Alex

Mars in not a comet...

Posted By Alex Carciofi

Hello all
I just got a brand new ETX-90 OTA that I'll use as a guide scope, but the first night out was a bit of disapointment.
I pointed to mars, that was almost overhead, and instead of seeing a disk I saw a comet like image. I could see the disk alright but there was a big V-shaped "tail" coming out of it.

I then pointed to several bright stars and the problem was still there.
If I use a high magnification eyepiece, things get much worse.

I guess this is a collimation problem. The problem is how to collimate the ETX? I did a search on the web, but only found intructions saying NOT TO try to collimate it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
Alex
