f/6.3 focal reducer - difference Meade/Celestron

Posted By Jeff Seivert

Is there a difference between a Meade f/6.3 focal reducer and a Celestron f/6.3 focal reducer? I own a Celestron C8+ and I'd like to get a reducer, should I look exclusively for Celestron or will another brand work. Do they all screw in/attach the same way?

Thanks...Jeff

Meade Telecompressor vs Focal Reducer

Posted By Jeff Seivert

Is a Meade Telecompressor the same as a focal reducer? Where would it go in relation to the visual back, diagonal, etc.

Is it worth it? 1.25" diag vs 2" diag for an 8" SC

Posted By Jeff Seivert

Hello All,

I'm sure this question has been asked and answered but I can't find it anywhere. I'm a couple of years into the hobby, gone from a 4.5" reflector to an 8" SCT with a 1.25" setup. Wondering if I'll see a big difference if I put a couple hundred into a 2" diag, and an ep.

Nagging question is...if the hole in the back of the OTA is same, how does more light get througt the 2" stuff?

Any major difference in mfg'rs once you're above the standard Meade/Celestron group. Don't want to throw a ton of money into a top of the line model. What's a good middle of the road brand.

Any articles on the net or reviews would be much appreciated.

Thanks -- Jeff

2 inch 40mm E-lux eyepiece question

Posted By Jeff Seivert

Hi All,

I just got a 2" 40mm E-lux eyepiece and was struck by it's size. A lot bigger than I anticipated. I tried it back and forth with a 1.25" 40mm and the bigger field of view is noticable. I'm wondering what I'm seeing at the edge when I move my eye left or right. It's like a dark cresent if I move my eye off center.

Is this the kidney bean I've seen mentioned? Vingetting? I'm not sure of the proper term.

Also, do all equivelant eyepieces act the same way or are some made in a way that prevents this?

Would a 2" 50mm ep be worse or better?

I also have a 2" 32mm Antares ep that doesn't do that but it's physically shorter by almost an inch (in height).

Scope is a Celestron C8, 2000mm focal length, 2" Antares Diagonal, 2" E-lux ep.

Thanks for any insight.

Celestron 8x50 finder problem

Posted By Jeff Seivert

I need a really smart guy for this one, I came into owning a Celestron 8x50 finderscope that I think has been modified with a mirror diag. and a 20mm eyepiece. It's got a focus ring on it too (helical?) Trouble is that when it's dialed/focused all the way "in" (overall shortest length) it'll almost focus on celestial objects but not quite. Is there a different eyepiece I can put in it that would be in the range of focus? Something like a 15mm or a 25mm? Not sure which way to go. I'm assuming this would act like a small refractor which I know nothing about.

Thanks

I'll post a pic if anyone thinks it might help.

Stuff hitting the moon

Posted By Jeff Seivert

Does stuff hit the moon often enough to see the results through an average 8" SCT? I'm thinking that with the number of meteors that burn up in earth's atmosphere, there must be plenty that don't burn up that are headed for the moon. Just think it would be neat to see a new crater today that wasn't there yesterday.

Cheers!

Mount questions

Posted By Jeff Seivert

Hello All!
What are the arguments for an equitorial mount vs a fork type SCT mount? I have an 8" SCT now on a standard wedge. I'd like to eventually upgrade to a 10". Should I switch to a GEM now or later? How big of a mount would I need to hold the weight?

Thanks for any input.

Converting a Celestron 8x50 finder to 1.25 ep's

Posted By Jeff Seivert

I'd like to convert my 8x50 finder to use 1.25" eyepieces. Now it has a .965 diagonal and 20mm eyepiece. I was having a hard time getting it to focus so I moved the front lenses in about 1/4" so now it has a good range of focus. I'm getting a .965 to 1.25 diagonal but I need to know if I have to use the same 20mm ep with it. The closest I have is 14mm and 25mm.

Are there any good tutorials on distance from lense -> diagonal -> ep out there? I'd really like to learn what I'm dealing with instead of playing trial and error. A way to calculate a given power or something like an SCT 2000mm fl / 20mm ep = 100x power?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Anyone recoat mirrors in Chicago?

Posted By Jeff Seivert

Anyone know of a place in the Chicagoland area that recoats mirrors? I've got a C8 that I'd like to have the primary and secondary redone. They each have a couple of spots, like mold or something on them. I figure I'd do more damage than good if I reach in there with a brillo pad to clean them grin

Thanks
