Foam vs Knife-Edge Baffles

I've seen various references on other sites to advantages of foam ridged baffles versus knife-edge baffling. Statements such as the foam "absorbs" the light and a conical foam baffle is placed along the light path to provide extra baffling. Is this just marketing hype and can some of the gurus here spell out advantages/disadvantages between foam and kife edge baffling and maybe even explain what exactly knife-edge baffling is?

Obviously, one disadvantage of the faom baffle, as some of us have found out, is that it can come loose inside the scope and slide around, making a rather amuzing "vwoop" sound. grin

M27 in Ha-OIII

I've been taking Ha and OIII shots of M27 The Dumbbell Nebula through breaks in the clouds here in Denver, Colorado over the past month. This Ha-OIII-OIII shot is comprised of 150 minutes each of Ha and OIII with 10 minutes each of RGB used in Lighten mode to bring out the stars.

Imaged through a Stellarvue SV115 f/7 APO with an SBIG ST-2000XM CCD, Astrodon Ha, OIII and RGB filters, on a Takahashi EM200 mount.

Veil Nebula West in Ha-OIII-SII

This is NGC6960 Veil Nebula West with Pickering's Triangle.

Taken with Stellarvue SV80S with Televue 0.8 reducer and Astrondon narrowband filters.

I've been accumulating frames for this over the last month or so. Total of 140 minutes each of Ha, OIII and SII in 20 minute subs.

Veil East Nebula

We had three great nights in a row here in Denver this week. I threw out the first night of images on NGC 6992 because I didn't like the framing but got 2-1/2 hours per channel on the following nights.

This is the NGC 6992 - The Veil East Nebula, taken with the Stellarvue SV80S at f/4.8, Tak EM200 mount, SBIG ST-2000XM and Astrodon Ha, OIII and SII narrowband filters. 5x30 minutes per channel.

This has been my first real use of flats which I automatically acquired at dawn with CCD Commander.

I know I must have played a LOT more than 4 hours of Pacman in college! Here's four hours of NGC 281 in Ha through the Stellarvue SV115 at f/5.6 taken from my denver backyard.

I've added an hour each of RGB to the 4 hours of Ha. Probably didn't really need that much of the RGB as there's hardly any nebula details in there anyway. I took a rather long and unconventional approach to getting the final version so opinions and constructive criticiesm is welcome (always is actually smile ).

Bubble in Hubble

Here's a narrowband image of NGC7635 presented in the Hubble Palette. I've pushed the blue and added some yellow saturation to help bring out the pillars a little brighter.

M31 in L(HaR)GB

I took this a couple of nights ago from my fairly light polluted Denver backyard using the Stellarvue 90T at around f4.5 with the AP reducer and ST2K.

Includes 75 minutes Lum and 60 minutes each RGB in 3 minute subs. 90 minutes of Ha were taken in 30 minute subs and added into the Red channel in Lighten mode, around 75% or so I believe.

Quite a bit of noise around the edges so wasn't able to push to get the outer regions of the galaxy. A dark site would help a lot but given work and family I just don't get out often...

Monkey Nebula in Ha

I braved the cold and intermittent clouds last night to take my first frames in almost two months. This is emission nebula NGC 2174, open cluster NGC 2175 and SH2-247 off on the upper left. Imaged through the Stellarvue SV90T at f5.6 with the ST-10XME CCD and Astrodon 6nm Ha filter.

I finished up some SII and OIII to go along with the Ha of NGC-2174 and SH2-247.

220 minutes of SII, 160 minutes Ha and 240 minutes of OIII in 20 minute subs.
