AR6-LXD55 vs. C6-RGT

Posted By Shawn Hinzey

Okay guys... I have YET to see a post like this so I'll be the first to bring it up. WHICH scope is better??? I guess you could say this is pretty much an AR6 vs. CR105HD thread, as the C6 is basically a clone of the new CR105's out there, only difference being it's on the new CG-5 goto mount. At any rate, the build quality MAY be a little different for this RGT scope, who knows.

Also at odds are the quality of the mounts (forget about the tripods as honestly they're somewhat disposable and upgradable items). I KNOW they both are a bit undersized but how about missed-counts/errors, the clutches, sound, smoothness, etc... so, LXD55 vs. CG-5 goto also.

Swing away guys...

CG5-GT Drive Motors

Posted By Shawn Hinzey

Anyone know if the new CG5-goto mounts drives motors are the SAME as the ones celestron sells to upgrade existing CG5s?

Also, encoders, how good are they on the stock CG5-gotos? Is it beneficial to get a regular CG5 and install separate drives and encoders?

Nexstar 8i vs. C6-RGT

Posted By Shawn Hinzey

Ok fellas... lemme hear how you'd stack these scopes against eachother - based on ALL merits. Planetary, DSO, astrophoto, tracking, mounts, etc.

In general they're about the same price range so i'm not considering price an option.

Decisions Decisions: 10" PDHQ vs. C6-RGT

Posted By Shawn Hinzey

Welp, if you do the math one realizes that you can pretty much get a Discovery 10" PDHQ for the same price as a
C6-RGT refractor. Now, I dont need to really list the differences between the 2 because everybody knows pretty much.

I would just like your opinions as to which one would be the more obvious buy.

I dont think anyone has compared these 2 scopes as obviously they are 2 completely different animals but it'd be interesting to see what people think and which they would prefer for the money.

Autoguiding: off-axis guider vs. finder

Posted By Shawn Hinzey

I've been pondering getting an autoguider and was just mulling over the best way to employ one. I see autoguiders most of the time plugged into a simple finder mounted on the main OTA. However, I would've thought that finding faint guide stars would be much easier with it attached to an off-axis guider right into the main scope. Is this just my imagination?? Am I wrong? Someone please correct me.
I guess adding optics in front of a camera is not such a good idea but for superior guiding it would just seem better. I guess one could just invest the 100 bucks in a good refractor to piggyback.

Astrophotography with C6-RGT

Posted By Shawn Hinzey

Anyone have any success/failure with astrophotography with the C6-RGT??? I have yet to see any meaningful posts on this subject. I HAVE seen posts in other forums regarding how to tweak the mount to accept and take full advantage of an autoguider... which will help. BUT, beyond that I havent heard of anyone doing any meaningful imaging with one.

By imaging I mean the full spectrum of objects (DSO's, planetary, solar system, etc.) As well, would be interesting to see what kinds of images one gets utilizing a chromacor or -V and projection.

Off-Axis Guider + Autoguider

Posted By Shawn Hinzey

Is it possible to place an autoguider on an off-axis guider visual back???
One would assume that this would be best as you could use the main scope (as opposed to a guidescope) as the actual guidescope and therefore guide on dim stars within the FOV of the object being imaged. Granted, the prism would lower the resolution of a very small area of the FOV but nevertheless it'd be easier to guide and cheaper at that.

Confusion: Off-axis guiding or Piggyback OTA??

Posted By Shawn Hinzey

Ok I've posted before on this and I have yet to get a difinitive answer so I'll try again.
My setup is a C6-RGT (on CG5-GT mount). I plan on autoguiding with a webcam and MAYBE (dollars permitting) with an autoguider (ST4).
Now, my questions:
1) is the CG5-GT good enough to hold an 80+ mm OTA on it plus accessories?
2) do guide stars show up BETTER with OAG or better with a piggybacked refractor??
3) given autoguiding with a webcam, which would be better?
4) is the C6-R focuser assembly up to the task of utilizing an OAG??

Someone please help me before I spend needless dollars on the wrong thing. lol

Clear skies!
