Borg 76ED vs. Tak FS78 vs. Teleuve vs. Vixen 80ED

Posted By Gene Griggs

I need an expert opinion. I am considering the purchase of one of these scopes (OTA only). I'm wanting something that is well corrected and as color free as possible so I'm only considering scopes using ED glass.

1. Vixen ED 80S APO (New Model Just Being Released) $900
2. Tak FS-78 $1195
3. Tevue Pronto OTA $775
4. Borg 76ED OTA $810
5. Any other suggestions?

The scope will be a dual use instrument (high mag photography / birding and some astrophotography). It will be coupled to a Sony 5MP camera using the William Optics convertor lens (a convertor lens that allows you to connect a digital camera to a 2" focuser).

Any opinions considering performance / price / transportability. I'm leaning towards the Borg but thought to seek some professional advice from some owners of the above equip. I have a large scope so no aperature fever problems.

Borg 50 / 76mm Front Filter Size (Need Info)

Posted By Gene Griggs

Does anyone know the correct front filter size to add a UV filter to a Borg 50mm or 76mm scope. Note: This filter will be placed in front of the 50mm or 76mm lens to protect these lenses.

Since the scope is modular and everything screws together this should be possible but may require a stepper ring? Anyone have this information?

Setup / Birding Questions and Sparrow ?

Posted By Gene Griggs

I'm looking for some birding tips. Finally got everything together. This photo was taken using a Borg 50mm ED with a 2" Meade diagonal, William Optics digital camera adapter coupled to a Sony DSC-P50 compact digital camera. Image was not modified in any way or cropped.

What image file sizes should I upload or will this server automatically adjust them?

And I believe this is a Sparrow???

Flying Hummer

This photo is a couple months old. Used a Borg 76ED with Sony Cybershot camera, 2" diagonal and William Optic digital camera DCL adapter.

His wings were moving too fast for my shutter.

Young Bald Eagle

Posted By Gene Griggs

Here's a young Bald Eagle (no white head yet) that was shot at about 150-200 yards off a moving tour boat in Lake Buchanan located in Central Texas.

It was tough to shoot off a moving boat with waves, engine vibrations, etc. I was unable to zoom in for a closer look. It was with 2 fully grown Bald Eagles that flew off once our tour boat approached.

Used a Borg 76ED with Sony DSCF717 and William Optics adapter & diagonal.

Young Eagle or Osprey ??? (Better Picture)

Posted By Gene Griggs

Here's the same bird but zoomed in and uploaded at a higher quality dpi (150 vs. 75). I also did an auto color / brightness correct in Adobe Photoshop 7.

Female Cardinal

Posted By Gene Griggs

Here's one I took over the Christmas holidays at a feeder. Taken with a Borg 76ED / Sony digital and William Optics adapter.

I got several more but thought the color / contrast on this one was the best.

Dove with New Equipment !!!

Posted By Gene Griggs

I'm finally getting my equipment set fixed and ready for some serious birding. It's been misting / lightly raining outside all day so took this one from under cover. Note the rain drops on the Dove's back. I thought it was pretty cool and was shot at prime focus. He was about 50 feet away hanging out above my feeder in the backyard (typical Dove)!

Bird Feeder Advice Anyone?

Posted By Gene Griggs

Here's a photo of a House Sparrow. It seems my back yard is over run with House Sparrows and Doves and squirrels.. But very little else seems to visit. I'll ocassinally see a Blue Bird or Cardinal but thats really it. I'm using a standard Home Depot mixed bird food in one feeder and another feeder has just Sun Flower Seeds.

Any recommendations from the experts out there? I'm considering getting a bird bath but don't want to make another bad investment that won't attract anything besides what I've already got.
