Weird Visual Effect

Posted By Casey Coffey

I was with the Oklahoma City Astronomy Club holding a public star party for some local college students the other night, and I had brought along my Discovery 8" Dob. I had plopped in my Nagler 13mm T6 and was letting people look through it when one of the other club members asked if he could plop it in his scope and try it out. He has a 4-month old Orion XT10 Dob, so I assume the mirror and mirror coatings were still in great condition. Anyway, he put the Nag in and asked if I wanted to see it in his scope. I said "sure" and proceded to look. At first, an odd effect scared the shiz-nit out of me because I was afraid something had happened to my Nag, but I quickly discovered that it must be something in his scope. The "odd effect" looked kind of like orange flames just along the inside edge of the FOV; it was along about 30 degrees of the circumference of the FOV - if that makes sense - when vieweing Jupiter. I did not get to look through it at anything other than Jupiter, so I don't know if the effect would still be present on something like M31. So my question is, what was this effect? To me it looked kind of like the pictures of older mirrors that are losing their coatings toward the edges, but his new mirror should have been in excellent condition. Thanks!

Star Parties this Summer?

Posted By Casey Coffey

Hey everybody!

I was wondering if there were any major star parties going on anytime from mid-May to about mid-August. I'm in central Oklahoma and I'd like to get some good observing in this summer before I head off to college. Anything that can be driven in a day is fine with me. Thanks!

Upgrading to a SCT questions

Posted By Casey Coffey

Hey all -

I just graduated high school so I'm off to college next year in north central Missouri. They have some nice dark skies out there so I will want to bring a scope. I currently have an f/6 Discovery 8" dob which I love, but it is decently large and would take up a corner in my dorm room.

I recently came across a friend in need who's selling a Meade 10" LX50 GPS that appears to be in very good condition, and which he's willing to part with for $1000 (everything included, tripod, etc). I would love to have a tracking system on a scope, and an SCT would be easier to transport in my Civic.

Would this be a good move on my part to sell my dob and buy the SCT by throwing in some more cash? Would the 10" SCT provide any noticeable light gathering ability advantage over the 8" dob? Would it take up less space in my dorm room?

Thanks,
Casey

I've never used the Backyard version, but I have the Pro version and I love the database and all the features. So...yeah.
