Object database preferences

Posted By Richard Anderson

If you were going online to access an astronomical object database, how would you prefer it be structured? Like a table with specifics on the object and then a photo and a drawing, or would you rather it be a shot of the object and then a paragraph-style description such as is found in Burnhams? Should such a database be two part, descriptive and then specifics tables?

TMB planetary eyepieces, why two types?

Posted By Richard Anderson

I know the new one is less than half the price of the Super Monos, is that the reason for issuing a second kind?

For best images, telescopes or telephotos?

Posted By Richard Anderson

If your target is stationary for a time and doesn't need the speed of a fast telephoto,
which would produce better images, an apochromatic telescope or a telelphoto lens?

Zeiss II, likely better than old Zeiss?

Posted By Richard Anderson

I saw ads for this limited run in some Brit magazine. The large eyepiece (have no idea of the focal length) looks nothing like the old 34mm, but the rest of the five look like to old Zeiss. I'm wondering if they might even be better than the sets from the 1990s?

Do classic achromats outperform modern APOs?

Posted By Richard Anderson

I've seen a Unitron 4" beat an apo of similar (94mm) size. Having an f15 focal ratio makes it much easier to control damaging aberrations that (despite the fact we rarely hear about them) still afflict some so-called apos. Chromatic aberration is only one of several aberrations but some people think if the image is colour free, it must be good.
Too bad that isn't the whole story. A Unitron will not beat a top-class apo, but it can beat lesser ED scopes and "sort of" apos as well as overly fast apos.

Cracking apart an 8 inch lens!!!!!!!!!

The fun should start when you have to experiment with element rotation to find the best combination to eliminate residual wedge and/or aberrations!

8.4mm - 8.7mm ?

Vernonscope has an 8mm Brandon. It's a kind of Asymmetrical Plossl with orthoscopic properties.
