17mm and 5mm Baader Hyperion

Posted By Stéphane zirkel

hi! smile

Recall:
-Are these eyepieces with large field clones of Vixen LVW like also the range of Orion Stratus, the differences between the Hyperion and Stratus are at the level of the FMC coating specific to the Eyepieces Baader Hyperion (better?) and a system of rings of adaptation to fix directly on the eyepiece camera or ccd in afocal. Hyperion are delivered in one limps out of paperboard of 16x8x7 cm containing: the eyepiece, 3 masks (for part 31.75, for the eyepiece folded back cap, the last for the eyepiece raised cap!), a bag in imitation leather black with a lace of tightening to arrange the eyepiece, to finish, a Silicagel bag, difficult to make more complete. what is impressing it is the size and the weight of these eyepieces, same to LVW Vixen range for example, good level manufacture.

-Specifications:
*Consisting of 8 elements in 5 groups, the Hyperion optical design delivers outstanding sharpness and color correction over a 68° wide field, along with a comfortable 20mm of eye-relief.
*High grade water-white glasses are used throughout, to deliver a crystal clear view with low scatter and excellent color fidelity, free of the yellow or bluish coloration imparted by many other eyepieces. Use of high-index glasses delivers low distortion and astigmatism.
*Baader Planetarium has gone to great lengths to give the Hyperions the most advanced multicoatings available anywhere (please note: these are not the same generic coatings other manufacturers use on their 'fully multicoated' eyepieces..). The Hyperion multi-coatings are proprietary to Baader and have been designed by German coating engineers specifically for the Baader Hyperions, and optimized for each of the glasses used. These coatings are applied with the latest thin-film German coating equipment, training, and process controls. The result are coatings that truly rival the best in the world (LT = 99,75%) - including the famous Zeiss Abbe Orthoscopic maybe and LVW certainly.
*Careful opto-mechanical design and execution of internal baffling eliminates stray light and ghost reflections. Uncapping the eyelens reveals a pitch black interior, with no distracting and contrast-robbing glints of light from unbaffled lens or metal surfaces. We call these our 'black hole' eyepieces.
*Works in both 1.25" and 2" focusers. The 1.25" barrel is threaded for filters and kept short (0.94") to work well in binoviewers and spotting scopes, and the 2" barrel is full-length and provides a specially designed locking recess. The field stop locations have been optimized for the shortest position possible (important for binoviewer use)
*Folding rubber eyecups work for both normal and eyeglass users. Each Hyperion comes with protective lens caps and leatherette pouch.

-Test with Dobson Orion XT-10i (254/1200 and f/d 4,7):

*planetery: is carried out on Saturn while profiting from a down turbulence, with the 17mm (X71) the image is superb, what a field! to see moved planet in the medium of a star field it is something to see! the rings are visible as well as the division of Cassini but it is especially the ballet of the satellites (specific) around which is worth the glance!!! no detected chromatism. With the 5mm (X240) the cloudy bands on planet are quite visible, Cassini clear and precise. What surprises is the precision of the image, the respect of the colors and contrast, I did not succeed in detecting chromatism there too. The 5mm + Barlow X2 (X480) great image also! I had never seen as many details before on Saturn. It will be necessary to make more tests on the Moon and Jupiter to confirm my good impression on Hyperion.
*deepsky: a true fun with the 17mm, contrast and respect of the colors are here, on the open clusters the images are beautiful, not visible deformation of image and that with Dobson open to 4,7, not of visible chromatism. On the galaxies I have M81 and M82 in the same field, what a comfort! Nebulas it is a pure moment of happiness with this eyepiece, M42 is splendid, quite visible extensions and the dark zones are cut out with a knife, with the addition of a filter UHC the spectacle is imposing, difficult to take off its eye of the eyepiece. For planetary nebulas use of Hyperion 5mm for Eskimo nebula, more visible details than with my old Meade SWA, the form of nebula is easily visible and the central star quite present. I detect in M42 trapeze, E and F stars. In the future, test on the globular clusters.

-conclusion:
What I had read on the web confirm a Baader Hyperion it's really good eyepieces, at least in the two focal which i could test. They have high level a quality/price ratio, finally in short with advising!!!! especially for the very open telescopes, which was my fear at the beginning, reassured here me is. Their good reputation is confirmed.
