Small refractor to use with a digital camera!

Posted By Denys Sakva

Hello everybody!
First a little bit of explanation. I don't want to build a telescope for nighttime observing (I do that with my binoculars and small Newtonian). I want to build a small telescope that will work like tele-extender for my Olympus C-4000 digital camera. Hope this is not way to off-topic.
I want to build something like CrystalVue LX Lens here http://www.ckcpower.com/. I don’t feel like spending $200 for 8x32 monocular even nicely finished.
I was thinking about buying a 50mm x 200mm achromatic objective here http://www.surplusshed.com/pages/item/l2105.html
Combine it with a 1.25” or 2” 30-40mm eyepiece, attached to my camera and have 5-6X times more zoom for birds and animals. I don’t care about upside down picture, what I care is an unvignetted field of view at least at maximum zoom. Do you think that would work?
What I haven’t decided yet is the eyepiece. I need one with a long eye relief (but at 30-40mm focal length they all are). Do you think I need a 2” eyepiece or 1.25” is enough? The front lens on my camera is close 1.25”. Would you recommend me something?
Thanks!

Light pollution filter with binoculars.

Posted By Denys Sakva

Hi everybody,
I live in a quite light polluted place. I own Oberwerk 15x70 binoculars and was thinking about buying a broadband filter to put it in front of one eyepiece. Will it work in this position? Is it worth using an LPR filter with binoculars?

Min-EQ mount question

Posted By Denys Sakva

Hi everybody,
I'm thinking about buying an Min-EQ + Electronic Drive System mount for widefield astrophotography (Digital Rebel and lenses from 18MM to 75MM). I have to bring all my stuff in a backpack (stable photo tripod, camera, lenses, 15x70 Oberwerk binoculars and camera mount) so camera mount should be small. I don't have instruments to build a motorized barn-door. Even being not able to build something significant from the scratch I'm not a techno-idiot, so diasassembling, tweaking and assembling back is not out of question.
So my questions are:
How much weight I can put on Min-EQ?
Is this a reasonable configuration?
Is it possible to mount Min-EQ on my photo tripod instead of those tiny legs?
How to polar align Min-EQ?
Thanks alot!
Denys. 8)

Please, help me with my project.

Hello dear equipement talkers!
I'm in the process of tuning Min-EQ mount into a portable wide field astrograph.
http://www.telescope.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=296&itemType=PRODUCT&iMainCat=6&iSubCat=24&iProductID=296
Going to use it with Digital Rebel for some wide angle shots outside of city lights. This mount is quite flimsy and won't take much weight. My idea is to put camera where the telescope should be and a guiding scope to a counterweight rod thus making it possible to use lighter counterweight and relieve the EQ head a bit. Do you think this will work?
As for guiding scope… I was thinking about using 8x50 finder as a guiding scope. Is it possible to “overclock” finder to higher magnification and use it for this purpose? Meade 8x50 finders are portable, lightweight and reasonably priced. I don’t care for visual quality as long as I’m able to see a defocused star split on four parts.

Thank you for your attention and help.
Denys.

Does anybody have any experience with Apogee richest field?

Posted By Denys Sakva

Hi, everybody!
I'm looking for a lightweight guiding scope for a portable EQ mount. Don't want it to be just a guiding scope, but rather more universal. I was ready to buy Orion ST-80mm, but stumble upon Apogee Richest Field 80mm OTA.
http://www.apogeeinc.com/scopes.html
It has 2" focuser and slightly higher F-ratio. Is it a decent scope for quick views? Have anyone tried it yet?

Camera as a counterweight?

Posted By Denys Sakva

Hi everybody,
Probably I'm posting to often, but I have one more question.
I have a small GEM that I'm going to use it with my digital camera for wide-field photos. Piggybacking it on a telescope is not a solution because mount is not strong enough. So I was thinking if it is possible to fasten it to a counterweight rod instead of real counterweight? This will relieve EQ head and my backpack will be 5 pounds lighter. What do you think? Have you seen such devices?
Thank you.

Did anyone compare Baader S-UHC with regular UHC?

Posted By Denys Sakva

By looking at transmission curves it seems to me that S-UHC is just a broadband filter.
