Tripod for Nextstar 11 gps

Posted By Lonnie Jaycox

I have heard complaints about the tripod of the NS 11 GPS and I see that Amazon is selling the scope without the tripod at a what looks to be a couple hundred less that other places. What would be a good solid triod that would work for this telescope and maybe make that a good deal?

6" Synta OTA Collimation

Posted By Lonnie Jaycox

I recently purchased a 6" Synta refractor that was highly regarded by its knowledgeable owner. In shipment the rear tube of the assembly was not covered and the tube and the inside of the primary attracted a fair amount of packing foam dust. When I went to disassemble the tube (take the lens cell out) I realized that this unit does not have the collimation screws in the cell. The entire cell un-screwed off of the threaded tube. I had to clean it, but i wonder if I can ever get this thing re-collimated. Can anyone point in the direction of some information on fixing this OTA or is this one now destined for mediocrity. I forgot to ask this question of the seller. I thought they all had the collimation screws in the push-pull configuration, had I known this I would have passed on it.
Thanks

Help with alignment problem NS11

Posted By Lonnie Jaycox

Help,
I have had two trips to open fields with my NS11 where it has been unable to GPS align. I aim it at the ground and turn it on like a good boy and here is what happens:
1.Turns back and forth to find north and does so.
2. Says "slewing to Vega" and does so. When it gets there it has the azimith almost perfectly, but the altitude is only about 3/5's of the way from horizon to Vega. I go ahead and center use the arrows to get to Vega, even though I know it is a long way. Do the enter and align steps.
3. It then says "slewing to Arcturus and again turns azimith almost perfectly but again is only about 3/5's the way up on the required altitude setting.
4. I again use the controller to go ahead and center Arcturus with the enter and align sequence. When finished it of course reports that the alignment failed.
The second time I did this I had it go to Antares instead of Arcturus and the scope pointed below thew horizon (Anatares was low in the sky to the south.) Thinking the time may have been off and I did not notice it I used undo to get it to use Polaris--same thing. I went ahead and did some star hopping with the hand controller and the Rigel and finder, but this is a pretty expensive star hopper. Any thoughts on what could be causing this?
I am going to post this on a couple of forums to see if I can someone who has had this problem and figured it out.

Thanks

Help for Christmas gift!

Posted By Lonnie Jaycox

My nephew is 14 yrs old and and has shown a real interest in telecopes. Used binocs now for some time. I have had him with me when using my Nexstar11. I got a very good deal on an older model 10" Discovery dob with a new focuser. It works well. My sister and I have decided that he should get this one for Christmas this year. I need some help. I need recomendations on a small set of eyepieces at reasonable cost to give to him--remember he is 14! He knows how to treat optics and seems responsible--he is 14 (did I mention that.) I also need a collimation set for this scope for him. Same parameters. I appreciate any suggestions. I have also realized that I do not know the f ratio on this scope. It does not appear that Discovery makes this model anymore. The only marking I can find is in magic marker on the back of the mirror, it has 5.7 on it. Is this it.
Thanks,

Binoviewer adhesive question

Posted By Lonnie Jaycox

Has anyone experienced a prisim or mirror inside a binoviewer fall free inside?
If so, how old were they?
Was there any indication that the adhesive used was not correct for the application and may have degraded causing this problem?
Does anyone have any experience with the proper adhesive to use for this application?
Thank You

Quest for the ultimate "Quick Look" scope.

Posted By Lonnie Jaycox

I too have been thinking about this, due to the long cool down on my 11" SCT. I have been thinking about the 210 Mewlon on an alt-az. I think it is a one trip scope (I have to cross the street to the park.) Although, the picture of these gorgeous 8" dobs on this thread have me re-thinking the Mewlon.
