Gibraltar 5 Mount for FS102

Posted By Kyle Roberts

Hello all,

I have a TAK FS 102 mounted currently to a TV Gibraltar with sky tour. The trouble is the mount appears to be a bit small for the scope. I am wondering if anyone could give me advice on if the new beefier head designed for the 5" TV scope the Gibraltar 5 would be a significant improvement in stability. This would be a low cost alternative as I can buy the head only and mount it to my existing tripod along with the sky tour. Of course I don't want to waste the money if this isn't going to improve things much. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Gibraltor Mount and Tak FS102

Posted By Kyle Roberts

Here is my situation. I have a TAK FS102 (non-retractable dew shield variety) mounted to a TV Gibraltor mount. Thing is the scope seems to be kinda heavy and large for the mount (very difficult to keep it balanced when not locked down and difficult to move when observing). My question is can I do anything to make the mount more sturdy? Would the new Gibraltor 5 larger head help or the panning type handle for moving the scope? Or is all this rather futile and should I seel the current mount and buy an equatorial liek I should have in the first place 8O. ANy help or advice anyone could give would be much appreciated. I am assuming anyone who has a TV102 mounted this way must have simliar problems.

Thanks in advance,
Kyle

Counter Weights for AltAz Refractor

Posted By Kyle Roberts

Hello all,

I have a Tak FS 102 mounted to a TV Gibraltar mount with skytour. Its a perfect quick grab setup for casual visual work. The trouble is the scope gets so unbalanced when I change eyepieces or try to view an object in a different altitude in the sky that it is a major pain the rear to deal with. My question is has anyone seen or developed themselves a counterweight system for the tube of a refractor that can help to offset this balance issue seemingly inherent in refractor AltAz set-ups? Or is my 102 just plain to heavy for this mount.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
