Unresponsive Astromart sponsor?

Posted By Jason Adamik

Have any of you had the experience of not receiving merchandise or any replies to emails or phone calls after placing an order? There is a rather prominent company advertiser here that hasn't sent mdse. after one month, already charged credit card upon order, won't return phone calls, won't reply to email. I am worried I am being scammed, but this same company continues to advertise...any advice?

Repainting a chipped up Tak FS-102 - advice?

Posted By Jason Adamik

I would like to hear what people think is the best way to restore a very nice FS-102 that unfortunately wasn't taken care of (cosmetically) very well. The glossy white paint is chipped in a good number of places, some pretty large. I could see that the original paint doesn't adhere very well to the aluminum tube since when I put on a Rigel finder base and had to take it off to adjust it the double stick tape just pulls up paint very easily. I would like to match the color of the dewcap since it has the nice Tak blue Japanese lettering on it. If I had to paint the main tube with some other type, like powder coat, then I would be willing, since the tube looks bad as it is. Any ideas on professional painting, do it yourself, paint types/brands, etc.? Thanks, -Jason

Cosmetically challenged Tak FS-102 tube

Posted By Jason Adamik

Hello group,

I'm a first time poster and relatively new FS-102 owner. I love the scope but when buying it used here disregarded my instincts that tell me that I should always hold out for a new or like new scope so that I don't get the urge to trade up and thus lose money on the deal. That's where I'm at now, as I'd like to get one with a tube a lot more new-looking. The previous owner didn't give the scope the respect it deserved and it has many paint chips 'fixed' with (ugh) 'white-out' correction fluid and one large area where the paint came off due to a Rigel bracket (the Tak paingt is far from durable and indeed chips off easily as I discovered when trying to move the Rigel bracket to a different location). I debated trying to get the tube repainted professionally but figured that stripping it and getting it repainted had some serious risk since I wouldn't trust an auto paint guy to do this without, say, getting the baffles painted with overspray or denting the tube. Is it possible to get a new tube or is that just too expenisve to justify, in which case I will try to find a newer scope and sell this one. Thanks for your ideas, -Jason

Can't get an answer on new FS-102 tube

Posted By Jason Adamik

Can anyone tell me how to get in touch with Art at Takahashi? Would you just call TNR in Houston? (is he typically available/in the office?). He didn't answer my email or make a comment on my post in this forum asking about getting a new tube for my cosmetically-challenged FS-102. Thank you, -Jason

Why are my ads getting taken down? and by whom?

Posted By Jason Adamik

I am a very long-time and loyal Astromarter with a perfect rating. I supported AMart before it was required though I really didn't post too many ads. Now I am trying to sell some items to raise money due to job loss. My ads in the books/pubs. section seem to be removed quite soon after they are put up. I can't imagine why. I am not like a pseudo-dealer selling so many thousands of dollars of items using a regular account, for example. I am just selling a few things here and there.

shiny filter threads on Meade 30mm UWA

Posted By Jason Adamik

John Nilsen said:

Hi, my newly acquired but apparently heavily used Meade 30mm UWA has shiny filter threads. Any blackening that may have been there is gone. I would think this would be an issue. Should I paint them flat black or flock them? Any recommendations? Thanks.
***be careful (slow, smooth strokes) even if using a small brush, as tiny paint 'spray' drops can easily flick off the brush onto the glass (I would definitely remove the barrel first). As far as using a Sharpie marker, these pens use a varnish-like substance in the ink as a binder and the result will be quite shiny. It reflects a lot of light but it's better than chrome. If you use a very thin layer of flat black paint a filter will still thread in but will eventually scrape off the paint, but you probably would have to thread a filter in and out a hundred times to notice it.

Longest 2" diameter focuser extension tube?

Posted By Jason Adamik

Can someone recommend the correct length to use for straight-through viewing with a Tak FS-102? Also, does anyone make a compression ring version of this length extension? I'm guessing about 3 inches would work.

Thanks,

Powermate Question

Posted By Jason Adamik

I'd like to hear peoples' impressions of the difference(s) between the Big Barlow and the Powermate, both of which I have (2" Poermate, 2X). I have seen little difference, really, so I might sell one. The Powermate holds its value better than the Big Barlow, so that may affect things. I do own a 27 and 35 Panoptic, and I read in another thread that the Powermate makes the use of the Barlow Interface unnecessary - this is something I never heard about. Can anyone tell me if this is definitely correct? Thank you, -Jason

Do I still need a barlow/powermate?

Posted By Jason Adamik

What about this - I have both a Big Barlow and a Powermate and so far really can't see a quality difference when I observe with both of them. I got the Powermate on a whim becuase I thought it was one piece of beautiful glass and figured I would find a use for it. Should I keep both for some reason or would you just sell the Powermate since it would go for more cash than the Big Barlow? Can anyone tell me more about why you use the Powermate and if you have any strong opinions about it either way compared to the 'Big' or other 'regular' barlows? Thanks

Review on 32mm. ERFLE

Posted By Jason Adamik

*****I sold one of these, but I regret it now. It was super sharp with pinpoint stars all the way to the edge of the narrow field in an f/10 SCT. I was impressed. The AFOV is narrow, though, for an Erfle - I estimated 45deg. IN shorter f-ratios it acted as other Erfles = bad coma and astigmatism made it worthless. So, actually, since I have no long f-ratio scopes it was OK to sell it.

Scott Mortimer said:

John - Do you mean the old one? I have one, it's a nice eyepiece. It gives near the maximum fov in 1.25 inch eyepieces, I think the AFOV is around 50 or just below. I kept this because it seems like good quality glass, nice dark background sky, nice white-neutral colors. Made in Japan. This was a nice line of eyepieces that is probably better than a lot of today's lower-priced options.

-Scott

PS, as Jon says these work better at long f/ratio. At f/15 I thought this was at least as good as a 30mm Tak LE. At f/8 the Tak LE would be better.

Has anyone seen/read any reviews on Celestron's 32mm. 1.25" Erfle ep? I have heard good reports when this optic is mentioned...would appreciate any feedback or actual "hands on" tests.. thanks, John M
