Lots of great perspectives here.

Buck, seems like you and I have traveled many of the same roads.

not ANOTHER collimation issue

Posted By Elliott Pitilon

It's probably the little bit of play (slop) in the fit in the focuser. I've experienced the same thing with a Cheshire eyepiece when checking collimation versus the collimation cap.

"The Backyard Astronomer's Guide" by Dickinson and Dyer gives a good deal of information about different eyepiece types and their own (respected) recommendations.

Which finder?

Posted By Elliott Pitilon

Floyd,

I have the Orion 9x50 RACI on my XT8 and have been very satisfied with both its performance and the need to be less of a contortionist. I too use mine in concert with a Telrad.

Great report, Dmitri. I hope to be doing similar observations soon (if it ever clears up again. )

Congratulations on a great night!

Floyd,

Sounds like the 26mm Nagler T5 is the answer those scopes of yours deserve. 8)

orion focuser

On the top of the focuser, on either side of the locking thumbscrew, you will see a little hole. A 1.5mm allen wrench fits the setscrews in there.

Gently tighten them until you take up the slop in the focuser without making it too tight to turn the focus knobs.

You should see much less image shift after that.

You can also adust tension on the focus knobs my tightening or loosening the four phillips screws on the plate beneath the focuser.

Hope this helps. Let us know how it works out for you.

Right Angle, Erect Image Finders

The Orion 9x50 RACI has proven a very good, useful finder, especially in conjunction with a Telrad.

Questions about collimation and focuser movement

Posted By Elliott Pitilon

Rob,

I have an XT8 but not the Intelliscope.
Check on either side of the locking screw above the focuser for two small allen screws. They take a 1.5mm allen wrench. By tightening them a bit you will remove much of the slop in the focuser. However, don't make them so tight that you make the focus knobs hard to turn.

You can also adjust the tension of the four screws that hold the plate over the pinion gear. (This will have an effect on the smoothness of operation.)

Hopefully this will help some. (I apologize in advance if you've already tried these remedies and I somehow missed that.)
