Barlow or new eyepiece ?

Posted By Douw Gerber

Hi all

I have an f/5 newtonian. I have a 20mm plossl that came with the scope and a 17mm Sirius plossl.

Should I buy a 2x barlow now or should I rather buy a 12mm plossl and get the barlow later.

Thanks in advance

Newb trying astrophotography - some Q's

Posted By Douw Gerber

Hi all

I have a 60mm department store refractor and a 750mm f/5 newt reflector.

I have modified a no-name brand webcam.

I have been taking some pics of the moon with the refractor but when trying this with the reflector I have been unable to get focus - how to explain - I start getting focus turning the focuser wheels away from me - ie. the camera is going towards the scope - and then I run out of focuser tube smile Hope that makes sense. What can I do to get around this problem.

Do I need a focal reducer or will buying a Logitech Quickcam Pro solve this problem?

Thanks in advace - oh yes I have atached a photo taken with my refractor - lemme know what you think.

Celestron 15x70 vs Oberwerk 11x70

Posted By Douw Gerber

Hi all

I am planning on buying one of the two bino's in the subject. I have been reading a lot of good reviews on the Oberwerk's but can't seem to find much on the Celestron. Anyone with experience on the Celestron please share. The reason why I am posting is because the Celestron costs almost half of the Oberwerk and as far as I know Celestron is generally a good product.

Thanks

Views through a 14" Celestron SC

Posted By Douw Gerber

Hi all

I had the oppertunity to visit the Hartbeeshoek Radio Astronomy Observatory(http://www.hartrao.ac.za) here in South Africa over the weekend. Very informative I might say.

At the end of the evening they pulled out their Celestron scope for us to view Saturn and the Orion Nebula.

Seeing conditions were great I thought (never saw so many stars since I have been observing - with bino's). Anyway I thought that the view of Saturn was not much better than the view through my 6" Newt in light poluted Johannesburg.

The Orion Nebula was better - could see quite a bit more of the nebula and it had a slight green tint to it.

My point is that I now cannot see that I'll ever spend $10000 on a scope when you get similar views through a $500 scope. The price difference is just not justified.

Anyway what are your thoughts and have you had similar experiences.

Battling to image Jupiter

Posted By Douw Gerber

Hi all

I have a 127mm Mak-Cass and I am using a no-name brand modified webcam to do my photography (limited budget and just playing around).

Last night I was trying to take some pictures of Jupiter but all I get is a very bright disk that looks like a light. (see attached picture) and ideas on how I can improve this.

It's only about 50 frames stacked - could this be the problem?

Any ideas will be appreciated.

Thanks

My Astronomy holiday - photo's

Posted By Douw Gerber

Hi all

As I consider myself very much a beginner at this (only started in December 2004)I thought this would be the right forum to post.

I recently went on holiday and made a point of visiting the various observatories we have in South Africa. Here are some pics of two of them:

1. Hartbeeshoek Radio Astronomy Observatory
2. Sutherland Observatory - SALT Telescope

Enjoy

Making a Dobsonian Mount

Posted By Douw Gerber

Hi all

I have a 6" Newt with a GEQ mount. I recently purchased a Orion Mak-Cass and am now using the mount for that scope instead.

I would like to build a Dob mount for the Newt OTA - any ideas where I could get plans for one.

Thanks in advance

Barlow or new eyepiece ?

Thanks for the advice all - I will be purchasing a TAL Barlow then. I will get a 12.5mm eyepiece next after this.
